As the universal truth goes, no matter how agile or flexible one is, age eventually does catch up with that person. Two of India’s finest batters, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are already 35 and 37 respectively. So by the time the 2027 World Cup arrives, Kohli would be 39 while Sharma will be 40 and former Indian cricketer, Kris Srikkanth believes that the latter may end up losing steam in South Africa.

In an informal discussion with his son Anirudha on his YouTube channel, Kris Srikkanth highlighted the fact that Virat Kohli can still be a potent frontrunner for India’s batting echelons for the 2027 World Cup which is slated to be played between South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. However, he believes that the current Indian captain in the longer formats may not be able to sustain himself in the long race.

He [Rohit] is a good player, but his age is 37 presently, and the next ODI World Cup is three more years ahead. He will be 40 years old then. You can't play World Cup at 40s. Yeah, Virat Kohli could play in the 2027 World Cup, in my opinion, for sure. But for Rohit, Mr. Gambhir, you went overboard; he will faint in South Africa.
Kris Srikkanth told his son Anirudha in a discussion on his YouTube channel

Both Kohli and Sharma were an instrumental part of the recently concluded T20 World Cup that saw India emerging as the champions after 17 long years and celebrating that with a victory parade and some blockbuster dance moves in Wankhede. Sharma finished as the leading Indian run scorer in the tournament with 257 runs while Kohli was the Player of the Match for the grand finale, smashing a crucial 76 against South Africa while the other batters struggled to get going.

Gambhir also clarified other doubts which surrounded the likes of Hardik Pandya’s vice-captaincy, Suryakumar Yadav leading the Indian cricket team in the shortest format of the game and also the exclusion of Sanju Samson despite being an ardent Samson advocate before he took up the job.

Gambhir clarified the fact that they considered Yadav for captaincy given his fitness and the ready availability. Gambhir further highlighted that it was Pandya’s fitness which made him irregular, forcing a stern hand from the Indian cricket brass.
