After being with WWE for over two decades, John Cena will finally ride off into the sunset by the end of this year. He’s a first-ballot HOF’er but yet to be officially inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. When it does happen inevitably, who’d get the honor to induct him? One of Cena’s greatest WWE rivals, Kurt Angle, recently opined on it.

Speaking to Chris Van Vliet on Insight, the Olympic Gold Medalist threw in a couple of names who he believes are the most deserving. Angle mentioned Randy Orton, dubbing him as arguably Cena’s biggest antagonist. Then suddenly, Kurt recalled Stephanie McMahon‘s role in saving the WWE career of John.

Angle mentioned how it was Steph only who identified Cena’s rapping acumen. For the unversed, McMahon overheard the Peacemaker star freestyling on a tour bus en route to a WWE show in the UK circa 2002-03. The Cenation Leader was told he’d be fired by WWE before Christmas as he couldn’t live up to their expectations.

But Stephanie, who was heading the creative team back then, eavesdropped on Cena’s rapping skills. She then asked John if he’d like to do it on live television. And that’s how The Doctor of Thuganomics was born. Stephanie pitched the gimmick to her father, Vince McMahon, and he approved of it. The rest, as they say, is history.

Angle continued saying that he’d be honored to present John with the accolade. After all, it was The Cyborg himself who got slapped in the face by a then-debuting Cena on SmackDown in 2002. That moment put the Ricky Stanicky actor on the wrestling map.

John Cena braces himself for an uphill battle at Royal Rumble 2025

As much stacked as this year’s field is, the fans are backing The Franchise Player to pull it off. John hasn’t competed in a Royal Rumble match since 2018. Even though he has won it twice, it’s hard to tell whether history is going to repeat itself.

One of John’s career-long rivals and Rumble match combatants, CM Punk, recently claimed on Raw that he doesn’t see the 47-year-old throwing him over the top rope. Cena is racing against time to become a 17-time World Champion in WWE.
