Everyone thought that the Chicago Bears’ general manager hit the jackpot following Caleb Williams’ 4-2 start to the rookie season; unfortunately, that was Williams’ peak of Year 1. The Bears finished at the bottom of the NFC North after suffering 10 straight defeats in the final 11 games.

Williams took a league-high 68 sacks and fumbled the ball 10 times. The 2022 Heisman Trophy winner seemed like a fragment of his college self.

Fans and the media blamed the offensive line for not protecting their rookie quarterback and the coaches’ defense-first approach. However, something else was going on behind the scenes at Halas Hall, which later found its way into a book soon to be published by an ESPN employee.

Williams’ father famously hated the prospect of his son playing in Chicago. However, the Bears owned the first overall pick and did not want to pass on the chance to draft the best player.

As the season progressed, Williams felt alienated in the Bears’ facility. The coaches allegedly didn’t teach him how to review tape. There was fan outrage, and support, except for Kurt Warner, poured in from every direction. He tweeted:

I never once had a coach sit down and teach me HOW to watch film!!! I might gleen from watching film with them, but no one walked me through it! I watched, asked questions and developed my own means of prep based on what I needed! Not saying the coaches should not have asked, they are coaches & should def know & help coach this, but I don’t think a class in watching film is a “normal” practice at the NFL level (at least based on anything I’ve witnessed)!

The Super Bowl-winning Rams QB’s tweet was in response to Robert Griffin III sympathizing with Williams. RG3 had written:

Caleb Williams not being taught what to watch on film weekly by his Chicago coaches last year was coaching malpractice. Just because it’s the NFL doesn’t mean that the development stops. If you want your QB to see the game like you, then teach him how to watch tape like you do.

Kurt Warner believes that Ben Johnson will bring out the best in Caleb Williams

The Bears fired offensive coordinator Shane Waldron and head coach Matt Eberflus midway through last season. Later, they hired former Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson as their head coach.

Warner drew parallels between his failed stint with the Green Bay Packers before capping off a Hall of Fame career with the Rams. Williams could have a similar experience with Johnson. Kurt Warner said via Bears Wire:

It’s sitting down with Caleb and going, ‘How do you see the game? What makes sense to you? What did you struggle with last year? Getting an understanding of how they each see the game and them being able to try and mesh that vision point together is to me the most important thing.

Johnson had earlier brought the best out of Jared Goff, who was on the verge of self-destructing after moving from the Rams to the Lions. During his first year in Detroit, Goff went 3-10-1, which improved to 9-8 the following year.

The turnaround was complete when the Lions won the NFC North in back-to-back seasons and played in the NFC Championship game.

Williams has all the tools to be successful in the NFL, and the Bears added firepower in the offensive line to better protect their quarterback.
