Lamar Jackson may be the driving force of the Baltimore Ravens’ dominance in the NFL, but the defense is the heart and soul of the AFC North franchise. One of the key pieces in the Ravens’ defense is safety Kyle Hamilton.

Hamilton played a major role in the Ravens’ consecutive divisional title triumph. In the offseason, they activated his fifth-year option, keeping the window open for an extension.

On Wednesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Ravens agreed to a four-year, $100.4 million contract extension with Kyle Hamilton, of which $82 million is fully guaranteed.

This extension made Hamilton the highest-paid safety in the NFL, overtaking the Detroit Lions‘ star DB Kerby Joseph’s $86.00 million extension with $36.12 million in guaranteed money.

Hamilton confirmed that his agent and Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta had been working on a deal in the offseason. He’s glad that it’s sorted out because dragging the negotiations into the regular season could have become a distraction.

DeCosta checked off a big task from his to-do list. It ensured that the grit of the Ravens’ defense would remain the same for years. Last year, Hamilton racked up a career high of 107 tackles, 9 pass deflections, 4 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks in the regular season to go with 12 tackles in the playoffs.

Pro Football Focus revealed that Hamilton played 355 snaps as a free safety, 292 as a slot corner, 246 as a linebacker, 124 as a strong safety, 78 on the defensive line, and 18 as a wide cornerback.

I feel like I’m talented enough in different areas to do what they ask me to do, but they also have to feel like that, too. And then I have to go out there and produce. So, it’s a group effort, but I’m willing to play wherever, whenever they need me to.

Kyle Hamilton sends a warning to the rest of the NFL about Lamar Jackson

The Ravens came very close to playing in the AFC Championship game in consecutive seasons until the Buffalo Bills knocked them out in the divisional playoff game. Lamar Jackson’s three total touchdowns kept the Ravens in the game, but a pick and a goal-line drop by tight end Mark Andrews tipped the balance of the tie in the Bills’ favor.

It was a disappointing end to a remarkable season in which the Ravens led the league in total offensive yards (424.9) and 65 overall touchdowns. The defeat also decided the fate of the 2024-25 league MVP award.

The Ravens are all set to face the Bills on the opening day of the new season. Many are counting the tie as a replay of the divisional round and a shot at redemption for Jackson. Kyle Hamilton has complete faith in his quarterback to not only defeat the Bills but also lead the Ravens to the Super Bowl.

We got eight [Lamar Jackson], we’ve got a chance. We go as he goes. I think everybody in the building agrees with me. As long as he’s here, we have a chance to lift the trophy at the end of the year. That’s not hyperbolic at all; he’s one of the best to ever do it.

The Ravens-Bills fixture always brings out the best in both sets of players. They share a 6-7 record in 13 meetings (including the playoffs). As for the 2025 week one showdown, CBS Sports picked the Ravens (1.5-point favorite) to complete their revenge on the Bills.
