The time has finally come for Shedeur Sanders to get his chance at starting in an NFL game. It happened when the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback and fellow rookie QB Dillon Gabriel suffered a head injury.

The former Buffaloes’ star came on to the field when the clock displayed 12:43 in the 3rd quarter to a rapturous round of applause. He egged the crowd on to cheer louder, and they responded.

He registered his first pass on the first snap a short pass to Cedric Tillman, who caught it for 5 yards. After a Quinshon Judkins 1-yard run, the Browns were slapped with an offensive holding penalty, pegging them back by 10 yards.

On the next snap, Sanders again threw the ball down the middle, this time to star tight end David Njoku, who registered 7 yards. With 8 yards still to cover for a 1st down, the Browns lined up again for a pass play.

As the 23-year-old QB received the ball and dropped back, he was focused on targeting Jerry Jeudy, who was breaking off a slant. However, Ravens corner Keyon Martin jumped to force Sanders to bail on the throw.

He then tried to look towards his right, but then ducked as Ravens star Kyle Hamilton broke through and extended to tackle the 5th round pick. The sack saw the Browns lose 16 yards.

Hamilton’s hit dislodged the ball, which the home team’s Wyatt Teller recovered. However, the former knew what he had just done, and he brought out Shedeur Sanders’ watch celebration to mock the rookie QB.

Shedeur Sanders registered 1st interception of NFL career

The Kyle Hamilton sack forced the Cleveland Browns to punt. Thankfully, on the next drive, their own otherworldly defense did the same to Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens.

With another chance to prove his worth, Shedeur Sanders stepped up onto the field with 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. After a no-gain run from fellow rookie Quinshon Judkins, the QB stepped up to attempt another short throw to Jerry Jeudy on the left.

After missing that, the Browns again called a pass play. This time, the Texas native was tasked to target Jeudy on the other side of the field. As he stepped back and was about to let the ball fly out of his hands, he was hit by Ravens linebacker Kyle Van Noy.

Even though some might claim that the hit could have altered the trajectory of the ball, there was no escaping the fact that the ball was nearly 2–3 yards away from where Jeudy was at the time.

Had it been close to the star receiver, he could have attempted to catch it. Instead, the ball fell right into the arms of Ravens corner Nate Wiggins, registering Shedeur Sanders’ 1st NFL career interception.

Shedeur Sanders finishes his NFL debut with a 13.5 QB rating

Sanders was clearly not having a good day, and he could have had another interception had Kyle Hamilton held on to the ball. No wonder he was seen late in the game, sitting on the sidelines looking crestfallen.

The son of the great Deion Sanders, who came in with more hype than any other 2025 draft pick, connected on just 4 of his 16 attempts. After posting an average of 2.9 yards per throw, he ended his debut with a 13.5 quarterback rating.

Usually, such low ratings are scoffed at, as they indicate that the quarterback did not play up to the average standard required to be decent in the NFL.

However, it was his first start. If Dillon Gabriel misses their next game against the Las Vegas Raiders, Shedeur Sanders will have another chance to prove himself, despite the resistance from his head coach.
