Kyle Schwarber is returning to Philadelphia. On Tuesday, the Philadelphia Phillies announced the re-signing of the designated hitter (DH) on a 5-year, $150 million deal after he became a free agent this offseason.

The 32-year-old had an impressive campaign in the 2025 season and broke several records. He crossed the 50 home run mark for the first time in his career as he ended the year with 56 home runs, the second most in the entire MLB.

His 56 home runs and league-leading 132 RBIs saw him finish second in the National League MVP race behind Los Angeles Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani, who won this award unanimously.

Schwarber was in the final year of his 4-year, $79 million deal and was expected to become a free agent and land a huge deal. Several teams were in the mix for him in the offseason.

As per reports, the Baltimore Orioles matched the 5-year, $150 million offer of the Phillies. His hometown team, the Cincinnati Reds, had put a 5-year, $125 million offer. Even the Pittsburgh Pirates tried their hand to land him and reportedly offered a 4-year, $125 million deal.

A few weeks back, the Phillies were a bit of the pace in the negotiations regarding him. However, it picked up speed in the past few days.

According to reports from MLB.com, Schwarber’s agent, Casey Close, called the club on Monday night and expressed that his client would re-sign with them if they offered a 5-year, $150 million deal. The club would do just that and successfully re-sign him and bring him back to Philadelphia.

Schwarber and the Phillies finished the regular season with a 96-66 record and reached the National League Division Series (NLDS), where they came up against the Dodgers. Despite dominating them in the regular season, the Phillies suffered a crushing loss against the NL West side in this best-of-five series and were eliminated following a Game 4 loss.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson believes Kyle Schwarber to age well with the team following 5-year, $150 million deal

Kyle Schwarber will continue to play for the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2026 season. The American international agreed to a 5-year, $150 million deal on Tuesday and re-signed with the team. His manager, Rob Thomson, believes he will age well with the team following this deal.

One major concern regarding this deal with Schwarber was his age. The DH will be 33 next year when he takes to the field. However, Thomson is not concerned about that and lauded the work ethic of one of his key players.

I think just his work ethic. The body’s gotten better over time. He’s in the best shape of his life right now, and I don’t think that that’s going to change… I think there’s a really good chance that he’s going to maintain this level. I mean, this was an unbelievable year for him. So I don’t think we can expect this every year, but I still think he’s going to be a high level performer.

Rob Thomson said regarding Kyle Schwarber

On Tuesday, the Phillies also announced the contract extension of Thomson. The 62-year-old, who joined the team in June 2022, has guided them to the postseason in every season. The club has extended his contract up to the 2027 season.

With the re-signing of Kyle Schwarber, the Phillies can now turn their attention towards catcher J.T. Realmuto. He, too, became a free agent after the 2025 season. The team does have an offer for him and is reported to be optimistic about his return.

Kyle Schwarber to represent Team USA in 2026 World Baseball Classic

Tuesday was a big day for Kyle Schwarber. While he re-signed with the Philadelphia Phillies on a $150 million deal, he was also announced as one of the 4 new additions to the Team USA roster for the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

Schwarber smashed a solo home run in the final against Team Japan in the 8th inning to cut the deficit to 3-2. However, Japan were able to hold off their opponents and emerged as the champions after Shohei Ohtani struck out his then-teammate Mike Trout in the bottom of the 9th inning. The Phillies star will be out there representing his country again in 2026 and hoping to avenge that loss.

Apart from him, Los Angeles Dodgers’ catcher Will Smith, Baltimore Orioles’ Gunnar Henderson and Milwaukee Brewers’ Brice Turang were all announced as Team USA members on Tuesday.

This year, Team USA will be led by Aaron Judge. The 3-time American League MVP was named as the captain of the side earlier this year after he missed the previous edition. Team USA will begin their campaign on March 8 when they take on Brazil from Pool B.
