Two situations are dominating NFL headlines. One is with the Dallas Cowboys and their soon-to-be free agent superstars. The other concerns the San Francisco 49ers.
It could be a big blow, especially if their leading receiver Brandon Aiyuk walks away next year leaving them hanging. Head coach Kyle Shanahan does not want that to happen with the regular season starting soon.
Among the many questions reporters had for the head coach, the most important question was with regards to the Brandon Aiyuk situation.
Zero updates. Nothing has changed.Kyle Shanahan answered
Suggesting that the needle hasn’t moved in his hopes of resigning one of his most important offensive weapons. Those blunt five words might also indicate his frustrations with the situation.
After all, the one thing that stood out last season was how the San Francisco 49ers offense worked. This season, with quarterback Brock Purdy being able to practice for a full offseason, the time was right to bring a lot of new facets to their game. They have done all that, but without Aiyuk on the field.
That will be frustrating for Kyle Shanahan, as he would have liked his offense to be ready before the regular season starts. But at least, the receiver has established that he wants to continue with the franchise.
Brandon Aiyuk’s loss could be Ricky Pearsall’s gain
The soon-to-be five-year veteran vetoed all trade destinations, as he may not have liked to go to a potential losing situation. Staying out of the field as the rest of the team goes through the drills will likely hard him more than he wants to. After all, rookie receiver Ricky Pearsall is the wide receiver getting all those first team reps.

That means, if Aiyuk does suit up to start the regular season as a 49er, he may not be on the starting 11 if Kyle Shanahan decides to run plays which Aiyuk does not know. A highly unlikely scenario, but even then, it is possible that the former Arizona State standout will lose out. Pearsall may get more reps if that is what the team needs to succeed.
How the San Francisco 49ers will handle three receivers jostling for two positions is unknown. But it could lead to a situation down the road. Hopefully, their Super Bowl hopes do not get lost in this mess. No wonder the head coach wants the deal done ASAP.
