The San Francisco 49ers took an embarrassing loss against the Kansas City Chiefs in the repeat of Super Bowl LVIII. In Sunday night’s game, neither side’s quarterback was able to put up a good offensive performance with Brock Purdy throwing for 212 yards and three interceptions, while Patrick Mahomes had 154 yards for two interceptions.

After the 49ers lost 28-18 at home, head coach Kyle Shanahan had enough of his quarterback’s inconsistent performances this season. On a night when Purdy was supposed to step up, he wound up stepping back and failing to get the team’s offense into rhythm.

Kyle Shanahan allegedly spent over five minutes grilling Brock Purdy in his locker room after San Francisco’s loss. The head coach was infuriated with his quarterback who had two rushing touchdowns but no passing touchdowns.

It has been a concerning season for the Bay Area team which is 3-4 so far in a year where it has had to be without RB Christian McCaffrey and its full receiver core struggling to be healthy.

Turnovers immensely hurt San Francisco’s offense and made the defense work overtime on Sunday

It was a matchup between the defenses of both teams. Patrick Mahomes had 154 yards and two interceptions while scoring one rushing touchdown. It was Kareem Hunt who put the Chiefs on his back as he scored two touchdowns, while Mecole Hardman Jr. had one trip to the red zone.

Kyle Shanahan left Sunday’s game with more questions than answers regarding the future of his team. Apart from Brock Purdy’s performance, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is feared to have sustained a torn ACL. If his fears are to come true, then it would keep Aiyuk out for the rest of the 2024 season which will further limit the team’s options on offense, and not to mention, undermine the $120 million contract that the team offered him earlier this off-season.

San Francisco has a lot to change. Until last season, this was a team that had no struggles in making it to the Super Bowl and cruised through the regular season.

However, this year, the roster is not playing in the same stratosphere. Kyle Shanahan is no longer an offensive mastermind because his rivals have had no issue in stopping that offense. As with Brock Purdy, he is not doing any favors to his reputation by underperforming without him being surrounded by elite talent.
