Kyler Murray was supposed to be the franchise quarterback who would help steer the Arizona Cardinals when he wore their No. 1 jersey for the first time back in 2019.
Fast-forward to 2025, and there are real concerns about his future with the team. It is not that there are question marks about his talent, or that people wonder if he could make big plays with his hands?
It is just that the diminutive size, coupled with his propensity to run more than he throws, has led people to wonder if he would ever be a major threat through the air.
Then came the injuries. Over the last four seasons, he has missed 23 games so far due to various ailments. Now, that number will grow after it was announced that the Cardinals are shutting him down for the season.
According to Cardinals beat writer Darren Urban, the 28-year-old quarterback’s foot has not healed since he injured it during their Week 5 embarrassment against the Tennessee Titans.
Gannon: Kyler Murray will not return this year. Had some tests out of state, foot is not progressing.

After that injury, Kyler Murray missed their next four weeks, which included their Bye. But after that, he was placed on injured reserve, and Jacoby Brissett deputized for him.
Now, it seems the veteran quarterback will continue until the end of the season, as Murray will now have to focus completely on his rehab, as there are concerns about his future with the team.
Fans wonder if Kyler Murray will ever play for Cardinals
The problem with the timing of this injury is two-fold. Football fans know that the Arizona Cardinals have not reaped the dividends when they handed out a $230 million contract to Kyler Murray.
Injuries and average play have seen the franchise languish outside playoff contention for the past 4 seasons. Any quarterback has a period of time they get to prove themselves.
In the NFL, that time is shrinking every year, and fans are worried the Cardinals may have lost their patience. There are concerns that he may be traded or flatout released if they believe they are better off without him. Check out examples of those reactions below:
He will never wear a cardinals jersey again lol

No way in hell the Cardinals bring him back right? they have to eat that at this point . He has been awful, and injury prone. Brissett out here slinging it better then Murray ever did

End of an era. It sucks that didn't work, especially after the first 3 seasons. Another rebuild coming for AZ

The Cardinals are on pace to post one of the worst records this season. That could set them up to be able to draft a good prospect or two. The question is if they choose to go and find Kyler Murray’s replacement, or will they give him one more season, and draft him help.
Kyler Murray’s future rests on relationship with HC Jonathan Gannon
The other factor that is often not spoken about loudly, but still lingers in the minds of many, is the relationship between Kyler Murray and head coach Jonathan Gannon.

I’m worried about the Rams right now, honestly.
Jonathan Gannon replied
This was the 42-year-old’s reply when a reporter asked him if Murray would be his QB next season. That answer was not wrong, considering he, too, might be fighting for his job.

However, to flatly deflect the question could be a sign that he either does not know the answer to that, or somewhere knows such discussions have happened behind closed doors.
