Kylian Mbappe is one of, if not the biggest name in Europe when it comes to football. The France international is heading into his first tournament as captain and hopes and expectations are through the roof!
The 2018 FIFA World Cup champions have found it difficult to progress in the Euros, with their last campaign ending in heartbreak after being eliminated in the Round of 16 to Switzerland. In a recent interview, the 25-year-old went over his aspirations and targets that he’s set for the upcoming tournament.
I want to win the Euros. I really want to win my first competition as captain and we want them (the fans) to be proud of usKylian Mbappe told CNN Sports
The 25-year-old has won both the FIFA World Cup as well as the UEFA Nations League with Les Bleus. That being said, Mbappe revealed that he still can’t look back on his stunning performance in the World Cup final in Qatar as he ultimately came up short to former teammate Lionel Messi and Argentina.
Mbappe also added that he’ll be more ready than ever to compete for the next World Cup in the USA. France kick off their Euros campaign with a game against Austria next Tuesday.
Kylian Mbappe opens up about not playing in the Olympics for France
Former FC Barcelona forward and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry is in charge of France as they prepare to host the 2024 Olympics. In an earlier interview, the manager revealed that he received several ‘rejections’ from players while in the process of making his squad.
Henry mentioned that Kylian Mbappe ‘rejected’ his offer too, even though the final decision was up to Real Madrid. Mbappe revealed in an interview that he is still thinking about the competition set to happen in Paris.
Of course I think about the Olympics. But it doesn't depend on me. But I can't force what I want on everyone else. I'm gonna be happy either way - if I go or not.Kylian Mbappe told CNN Sports
Despite the absence of Mbappe, France boast a significant number of top talents of which Bradley Barcola, Warren Zaire-Emery, Michael Olise, and Mathys Tel are just a few. The tournament begins on the 24th of July, with France coming up against the United States, Guinea and New Zealand. Thierry Henry joked that the last time he received so many rejections (for the squad) was in University.
