After landing Japanese star Roki Sasaki on Friday, the Los Angeles Dodgers made another major move on Sunday. The 2024 World Series champion agreed to a 4-year $72 million deal with 30-year-old relief pitcher Tanner Scott, sending shockwaves across social media again.
In the past two seasons, Scott emerged as one of the top relief pitchers in the game. During the 2024 season, he was traded to the San Diego Padres from the Miami Marlins.
He had a dominating run in the playoffs as he threw 4.1 scoreless innings across five games. During his matchup against Shohei Ohtani, he struck out the two-way star on all four occasions.
After the end of the season, Scott became a free agent. The 30-year-old has now agreed to join the Dodgers, becoming the latest big name to join them this offseason. According to reports from MLB.com, Scott’s deal includes a $20 million signing bonus and $21 million in deferred salary.

As per insider Jon Heyman, the Toronto Blue Jays were among those clubs who were in talks with Scott. Once again, the Toronto-based side came up short as Scott picked the Dodgers, much like Roki Sasaki.
Jays were among teams in on Scott. Tough to compete with Dodgers these days, on field or off

The Dodgers have been super busy this offseason. Apart from Scott and Sasaki, the team roped in Blake Snell, Michael Conforto, and Hyeseong Kim. They also brought back Blake Trenien, and Teoscar Hernandez and extended the contract of Tommy Edman.
The National League side are now expected to have a luxury tax payroll beyond $375 million. This will be about $70 million more than the second highest team – Philadelphia Phillies, who are expected to have a luxury tax payroll of $305 million.
When Tanner Scott’s deal is made official, the Dodgers’ luxury-tax payroll for 2025 will exceed $375 million. That is about $70 million more than the next-highest team, Philadelphia. The Yankees are the only other team with a CBT payroll projected to be over $300 million.

The Dodgers will now be eyeing to do what no team has done in over two decades – win the World Series in back-to-back seasons. The New York Yankees were the last team to successfully defend their crown as they won three in a row from 1998-2000.
