The Los Angeles Dodgers headed into this weekend’s series against the San Diego Padres hoping to make a statement. They would do just that and complete a 3-game series of their division rivals and took control of the NL West once again.

The reigning World Series champions have been in a slump recently. Before this series against the Padres, they got swept by the Los Angeles Angels and finished the regular season with an 0-6 record against them.

The Padres, on the other hand, had swept the San Francisco Giants and took possession of first place. The lead did not last long for them. In the first game of this series, pitcher Clayton Kershaw picked up his 7th win of the season as he pitched 6 strong innings and gave up just one run.

In the second game, the Dodgers would shut out their opponents as their former pitcher Blake Snell also threw 6 strong innings. The 6-0 win saw the Dodgers regain the lead in the division standings.

The final game on Sunday turned out to be another close encounter between them. With the two teams tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the 8th inning, Mookie Betts slammed a go-ahead home run. Betts, who has been struggling with his form, smashed a solo shot off Robert Suarez to give his side a 5-4 lead.

The Padres were unable to mount a comeback from this late blow and dropped the game 5-4. This saw the Dodgers complete the sweep of them and take a 2-game lead at the top of the standings.

The Dodgers (71-53) now have an 8-2 record against the Padres this season. The two teams will face each other one final time in the 2025 regular season this weekend at Petco Park.

Mookie Betts comments on his go-ahead home run in sweep over the Padres

If there is one player who has been under fire for the Los Angeles Dodgers this season is Mookie Betts. The 8-time All-Star has been struggling with form this year. On Sunday, his home run turned out to be the main difference in the game.

The Dodgers would blow a 4-0 lead in this game. After going 4-0 up in the first inning, they gave up runs in the 3rd, 5th, 6th and 8th inning which saw the Padres level it up at 4-4.

The visitors would then turn to their closer, Robert Suarez. Betts, who was 0-2 in the game and hitless in the series thus far, would take a 2-0 count. On the third pitch, the 3-time World Series winner lifted a 97 mph fastball into left center field to give his side a 5-4 lead.

While speaking with Kirsten Watson after the game, Betts claimed that he was ‘glad‘ to be able to contribute to his team in this series sweep of their divisional rivals.

It’s about time I did something. It’s been all year, and so I’m just glad I was able to help the team win.

Betts and his team will now turn their attention towards the Colorado Rockies. They will travel to Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, to take on the Rockies, who have won 5 of their last 6 games. Meanwhile, the Padres will take on the SF Giants again in a 4-game series before hosting the Dodgers over the weekend.
