In an offseason where the Los Angeles Dodgers have made some big moves to strengthen their team, they have also let go of some of their stars. On Monday, the team announced the trade of versatile infielder Gavin Lux to the Cincinnati Reds.

Lux joined the Dodgers through the 2016 MLB draft. After spending three years in the minor league, he made his debut in MLB in 2019.

Lux missed the entirety of the 2023 campaign after an ACL tear in his right knee. This perhaps contributed to a slow start from him in the 2024 season. In the Dodgers’ World Series winning campaign, he hit 10 home runs in the regular season.

In Game 5 of the World Series against the New York Yankees, he hit a crucial sacrifice fly to tie the game at 6-6. Mookie Betts would do the same and hit another sacrifice in the top of the eight inning to take a 7-6 lead which proved decisive.

The move of Lux comes after the Dodgers signed South Korean superstar Hyeseong Kim on a three-year deal. For the Reds, this could be an ideal move as they recently traded away second baseman Jonathan India to the Kansas City Royals. Lux could directly replace him on second base now.

Speaking regarding this move, Reds’ President of Baseball Operations Nick Krall called Lux a “quality left-handed hitter“. He also admitted that the team will play him in various positions in the Spring Training and then decide which one suits him the best.

If you looked at our team last year, people argued that we had too many infielders to begin the year. Obviously, that didn’t play itself out. We were last in WAR at third base, first base and DH. We look at [Lux] as a guy that’s going to play second base, play some outfield and DH some in Spring Training… We think that he’s a quality left-handed hitter that just lengthens our lineup out.

Nick Krall said as per MLB.com

In exchange for Lux, the Reds gave away a Competitive Balance Round A pick (No. 37 overall) and outfield prospect Mike Sirota. The youngster was ranked at 14 in the top 30 prospects of the National League Central side.

The 27-year-old has now joined the Cincinnati Reds through a trade deal. Fans on social media seem to have been left divided with this move. While some praised this deal some questioned why the Reds traded away Jonathan India in the first place.

In the 2024 season, the Reds finished with a negative 77-85 record, fourth in the league. They missed out on the playoffs once again. With the addition of Lux, the team would be hoping he can bring that playoff experience with him as they try to make a push for the postseason and have a positive record in the 2025 season.
