La Liga: Real Madrid fall to a disappointing draw against Villarreal
Real Madrid dropped two points again as they drew 1-1 against Villarreal in La Liga. Benzema and Ramos were huge misses on both ends of the pitch for Madrid and this caused them to drop points. The pressure will mount on Zidane after this match as Madrid haven’t been able to perform their best. Meanwhile, Villarreal performed strongly and will see this as one point gained. Moreover, they are in spectacular form this season and currently sit on second, two points ahead of Real Madrid. The coach of the team, Unai Emery is on track to recover his fallen reputation after this match from his ill laden spell at Arsenal.
First Half
Real Madrid started the match with a bang as they got the opening goal within 2 minutes. Mariano got the goal from a header through a Dani Carvajal cross. Villarreal players protested for offside but the goal was given much to their dismay. However, both the teams struggled to create clear cut chances after this with Madrid happy to protect their slender lead.
Second Half
Villarreal took the initiative in the second half with Madrid happy to sit on their lead. Moreno and Parejo were guilty of missing chances as their shots flashed wide of the posts. They also had shouts for handball waived by the referee. However, the goal finally came for Villarreal as Courtois inexplicably came out of his line and caught Chukwueze. Moreno stepped up and coolly converted the penalty to equalize the match. Moreover, Villarreal continued to look the most likely to get the winner but in the end settled for a draw.
Zidane was pretty upset after the match and said, “It’s not a good point. We deserved more for the effort in the first half. We dropped two points. It was a bit of everything. This is Real Madrid. We know the situation, we know all about it, every time we play we can’t fail.”
