Arguably one of the greatest players to ever play the game of basketball LeBron James celebrated his 41st birthday on Tuesday night. It was not the perfect night for the four-time NBA champion as the Los Angeles Lakers were blown away 128-106 by the Detroit Pistons at the Crypto.com Arena. It was a game where the Lakers were playing catch-up for the entire match.

It was a humiliating loss for the Lakers as they have now dropped to fifth in the Western Conference standings with a 20-11 record and have now lost four out of their last five games. The Pistons have continued to build on their strong start to the 2025-26 campaign as they sit at the top of the Eastern Conference standings with a 25-8 record.

The 2025-26 campaign represents a record-breaking 23rd season for LeBron James. A number no player has ever achieved in league history. After missing the first 14 games of the season due to sciatica nerve issues, James has featured in 14 games and is averaging 20.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and 6.7 assists so far.

In the backend of his career, James has had to adapt to a new role for the Lakers as the roster has been built around Luka Doncic who is having an MVP-caliber season. But with Austin Reaves ruled out for a month, James may be asked to do more on the offensive end. Despite the strong start to the season for the Lakers, they are still not seen as championship contenders as they continue to struggle against young and athletic teams.

Prior to the start of the match, Lakers fans honored the “King’s” birthday by singing “You are my Sunshine” as James went through his familiar chalk-toss celebration.

James’ birthday celebrations did not go as planned as he scored 17 points to go along with four rebounds and four assists, but the Lakers will look to get back to winning ways when they take on the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday.

While James may not have the same impact today as he did two decades earlier, he spoke about what advice he would give to his 18-year-old self in his post-match locker-room interview.

It’s a lot of advice I would give him. Work hard. There’s no substitute for hard work. I think hard work and dedication, if you want to be great, is going to pay off. Keep the blinders on. As much as they praise you, there’s even triple, quadruple of people trying to bring you down and want to tear you down every single day.

James may still be going strong for the Lakers, but the end is nearer than ever. But as long as he steps onto the court, the limelight will always be on him.
