Lakers made a mistake by firing Darvin Ham ‘early in his career,’ Lou Williams claims

Darvin Ham

Lou Williams is of the opinion that the Los Angeles Lakers made a mistake by firing head coach Darvin Ham. Williams thinks Ham had potential for growth and should have been given more time to develop as Ham was let go after the Lakers’ first-round playoff exit, despite leading the team to the Western Conference Finals the previous season.

Ham’s tenure was marked by controversial rotations and criticism from players, but Williams believes the Lakers were too quick to judge him. The team’s recent coaching search has been chaotic, with JJ Redick initially considered a favorite before UConn’s Dan Hurley emerged as a top target. However, Hurley surprisingly turned down a $70 million offer, leaving the Lakers without a clear plan B.

I'll go viral, and I'll say maybe [The Lakers] made a mistake by letting Darvin Ham go. It was very early in his career, very early in this process. Sometimes, you have to allow things to go and allow things to see what you're going to get out of it.
Lou Williams said on FanDuelTV’s Run It Back

The Lakers’ failure to land their top choice has left them embarrassed and without a clear direction. On this, Williams suggests that had the Lakers given Ham more time, he may have broken through and become one of the league’s top coaches.

The Lakers’ decision to fire Ham and their subsequent coaching search has left the Los Angeles fans feeling frustrated and uncertain about the team’s future. Instead, the team is now scrambling to find a replacement, with no obvious answer in sight.

At the moment, Darvin Ham, former head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, has joined the Milwaukee Bucks as the top assistant coach to Doc Rivers. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Ham was highly sought after by teams this spring.

Magic Johnson, Lakers legend and Basketball Hall of Famer, expressed his happiness about Ham’s new role on social media. Johnson let this known in a post on his X account.

I’m so happy that my friend and Milwaukee Bucks Head Coach Doc Rivers has named former Lakers Head Coach Darvin Ham as his new Top Assistant!

In addition to serving as an assistant coach for the Bucks from 2018-22, Ham played for the team from 1999-2002. This period included the Bucks’ run to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2001, where he played alongside Ray Allen, Glenn Robinson, and Sam Cassell.
