Lamar Jackson 40 yard dash: How quick is the QB?

Lamar Jackson, the quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens, is aiming to redefine the quarterback paradigm. While the average NFL quarterback is a big and powerful pocket shooter, Jackson’s key attributes are completely unique. Jackson thrives at keeping defenders at bay by exploiting his agility and speed.

Jackson has a 40-yard sprint time of 4.34 seconds. He has said that his time is theoretically quicker, adding that the moment he ran 4.34 was not in ideal circumstances.

Despite the fact that Jackson did not run the 40 at the NFL Combine or Louisville’s Pro Day, there are timed runs of his 40-yard dash. Jackson recorded a 4.34-second 40-yard sprint on a Speed Day organized by Louisville in 2017, ahead of the 2018 NFL Draft.  When questioned about his timing, Jackson informed that he was suffering from a turf toe, which slowed him down.

His speed is comparable to a few of the quickest 40-yard sprint times ever recorded among active professionals of all positions. His time is only 0.02 seconds less than that of Marquise Brown and present Will Fuller V. Despite his extraordinary speed throughout the drill, he was still a tenth of a second slower than John Ross’ Combine record of 4.22 seconds.

Jackson is the obvious frontrunner among quarterbacks. Patrick Mahomes ran a 4.80 in the 40-yard sprint, while Russell Wilson ran a 4.55. Cam Newton, who is currently with the New England Patriots, ran the 40-yard sprint in 4.59 seconds in 2011.

Marcus Mariota, the backup quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders, ran for 4.52. Kyler Murray, the quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals, has never run a 40-yard sprint but he claims to have run it in 4.38 seconds, barely a tenth of a second slower than Jackson’s blistering speed.
