Does Lamar Jackson missing the Baltimore Ravens’ OTA hint a red flag? Well, given the fact that these organized team activities are voluntary, it’s quite normal for players to miss it if they want. However, in the case of the star quarterback, his absence is literally costing him a huge sum.
Jackson’s 2023 contract, which made him one of the highest-paid athletes across the world, included $750,000 as an annual offseason workout bonus which he would receive upon attending 80 percent of the offseason workouts, excluding the mandatory minicamp.
However, as the quarterback has already missed four out of the five off-season programs, he won’t receive the whopping $750,000 as mentioned in his contract. The same clause with the same terms covers the coming three years: 2025, 2026, and 2027.
This $750,000 was initially viewed as offseason roster bonuses, however on a closer inspection it was found to be workout bonuses, which Jackson can’t earn anymore. This means, his annual compensation of 2024 drops from $32.5 million to $31.75 million.
Even though the amount doesn’t make that much of a difference in Jackson’s wealth, it remains a huge amount missing from his annual earnings, regardless of the reason why the star quarterback is missing so many off-season programs.
Lamar Jackson sheds pounds for next season
After winning the NFL MVP award for the second time last season, Jackson himself admitted he had put a chip on his shoulder to chase the Super Bowl. It’s also crucial for his Hall of Fame potential career, post-retirement. That’s why, through whatever means the two-time Pro Bowler is preparing himself for a total showdown in 2024.
He shared that he wants to be more agile next season, and that’s why he has significantly lost weight since last season’s playoff elimination. Although he refused to reveal his current weight, he said last month that he weighs around 205 pounds.
I’m like two-something right now. But I just say it was important enough to be able to move around a little bit extra, that’s all.
Lamar Jackson said after the Ravens’ second OTA practice.
After the AFC championship loss against the reigning Super Bowl champions, Jackson has been motivated the entire offseason and working on improving his games, as he lost weight to move around the football field and be more active.
