The Baltimore Ravens were in disarray. Their offense looked frozen in place like a gargoyle, fearsome to look at, yet unable to do anything that actually led to winning.

The Ravens succumbed to a paltry 14-32 defeat at the hands of the Cincinnati Bengals on Friday. The Bengals outdid the Ravens in passing and rushing offense, as star quarterback Joe Burrow, fresh off a gruesome injury, spectacularly finished with 261 yards and two touchdowns through the air. He also set up six field goals, all of which Evan McPherson cleaned up perfectly.

Meanwhile, there wasn’t much going for the Ravens’ side. The two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson couldn’t get his usual rhythm straight. He completed less than 50% of his passes and turned over the ball as well. Jackson hasn’t been performing well for some time now. After the loss to the Bengals, he has not thrown a touchdown pass in three games.

Yes, the Ravens had won their previous two encounters with Jackson. It was more of a rushing offense thing that got them those much-needed wins, and needless to say, the opposing teams were the Cleveland Browns and the New York Jets.

Add the 27-19 win against the Minnesota Vikings to the three; Jackson hasn’t completed 60% of his passes in any of these four outings. The lack of touchdown passes in three straight games and the inability to complete 60% of his passes in four consecutive outings, that’s a career first for Jackson.

In the last three games, Jackson has registered zero passing touchdowns, zero rushing touchdowns, three interceptions, three lost fumbles, and nine sacks.

The recent dip in form would only add to his ensuing criticism of the lack of postseason success. The Ravens’ chances of making the playoffs took a nose dive after they lost the game against the Bengals and lost the division lead to the Pittsburgh Steelers. A wildcard entry from the AFC North is highly unlikely this season and the Ravens would find themselves out of the race if they don’t get their act together.

Lamar Jackson’s recent slump has invited a lot of cyber trolls

In 2024, Ryan Clark made a unique comparison between Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes. Clark compared Jackson to point guard Russell Westbrook, who’s had incredible numbers in regular season and playoffs but choked when he came head-to-head with Damian Lillard, who’s basketball metaphor for Patrick Mahomes.

Clark’s christening of Jackson has stuck around. The Ravens under Jackson have lost to his biggest competitors: the Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen in Week 1, the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes in Week 4, and now the Cincinnati Bengals and Joe Burrow in Week 13. The comparison has become an X thing with fans bringing it up to troll Jackson’s performance this week.

Jackson’s dip in form is also a window into how fickle and changing the sports world can be. It’s either fire emojis or cyberbullying at its peak. However, Jackson has a golden opportunity to prove himself as they play the Pittsburgh Steelers next week with the division and playoffs at stake.
