Emma Raducanu‘s decision to abruptly end her partnership with coach Vladimir Platenik surprised the latter. Raducanu is in Miami for the fourth WTA 1000 event of the season, which she is playing after her first-round defeat at Indian Wells.

Raducanu is without a permanent coach since Nick Cavaday left her team in January to prioritize his health. Before Cavaday and Platenik, Raducanu worked with Nigel Sears, Andrew Richardson, Torben Beltz, Sebastian Sachs, and Dmitry Tursunov.

Platenik joined her team before the event in the California desert and on the eve of her first match in the tournament against Moyuka Uchijima, Raducanu made her feelings clear about the partnership.

So for me, it’s absolutely understandable that she’s under a lot of pressure. She told me she was feeling stressed. There are no hard feelings from my side. She finished the relationship in a fair way, maybe too quickly, but this is tennis, this is sport. We need to respect that. She was not feeling OK, and that was her decision. I didn’t want to go into deeper communication about that.

Vladimir Platenik told BBC

Raducanu has not yet tasted success in WTA events since lifting the 2021 US Open title as a teenager. Injuries and form issues have continuously affected her performance. She stayed on the sidelines for most of the 2023 season due to multiple surgeries. After playing less than 15 tournaments last year and vowing to add more events to her schedule, Raducanu still couldn’t make much improvements.

After withdrawing from the ASB Classic due to a niggle, Raducanu kick-started her campaign for the 2025 season at the Australian Open and made it to the third round, her first in her career. She lost to World No.2 Iga Swiatek and since then, the Brit suffered three consecutive defeats in Singapore, Abu Dhabi, and Doha. Raducanu then progressed to the second round in Dubai and again suffered a first-round exit, this time, at Indian Wells.

Emma Raducanu makes feelings clear about Jack Draper’s Indian Wells win

While Emma Raducanu is struggling to win matches, compatriot Jack Draper has already played two finals this season. Draper, after his fourth-round exit at the Australian Open, fell to Andrey Rublev in the Doha final.

The 23-year-old then progressed to his first finals at Indian Wells, en route to which, he knocked out two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. Draper beat Holger Rune to claim the biggest title of his career and rise to No.7 in the rankings table. Raducanu was asked to comment on Draper’s win during her Miami Open campaign.

I’m so happy for him. He’s someone I’ve known since when we were so small. We grew up together and I know how much work he’s put in, how much he deserves it. I’m just really happy and rooting for him.

Emma Raducanu told Sky Sports

Draper, who is also in Miami right now, will now hope to join seven ATP players, including Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer by completing the Sunshine Double. He is the sixth seed in the tournament and will start his campaign against Jakub Mensik.

Emma Raducanu to lock horns with Emma Navarro

Navarro, the eighth seed, has received a bye and the match against Raducanu will be her first in the event. The World No.60, on the other hand, knocked out Japanese teenager Sayaka Ishii 6-2, 6-1 to progress to the second round at Miami Gardens for the first time.
