Laura Robson believes compatriot Emma Raducanu doesn’t ‘need huge number of matches’ to prepare for Grand Slam event
Emma Raducanu invited criticism for skipping two events before the US Open. Laura Robson explained why the 21-year-old decided to do so.

Emma Raducanu has been strictly managing her schedule since recovering from the wrist and ankle injury. When she was denied the wild cards to play at the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open, she decided to skip both tournaments and instead chose to train hard ahead of the US Open.
While this approach invited criticism from tennis fans and a few pundits, Raducanu’s compatriot Laura Robson believes that skipping two weeks of competition would benefit Raducanu. Robson feels Raducanu is not a player who needs a lot of matches to prepare for a Grand Slam event.
She’s not a player who needs a huge number of matches going into a big event. I think we’ve seen that before, where she might play the week before, just to get some fine-tuning done, but she really enjoys the training block and plays her best tennis when she’s coming off a really strong couple of weeks of practice.Laura Robson told the PA news agency
Robson also thinks that Raducanu will be fresh while entering Flushing Meadows compared to those players who have been continuously participating in tournaments on hard courts before the US Open. Raducanu skipped the Paris Olympics to prepare for the US Open by participating in the Citi Open and advanced to the quarterfinals where eventual champion Paula Badosa knocked her out in three sets.
Raducanu lifted the title in New York back in 2021, winning it as a qualifier. However, the 21-year-old is yet to win her second title on the WTA Tour, let alone another Grand Slam trophy.
Laura Robson feels Katie Boulter has a chance of winning the US Open
In that same interaction with the PA news agency, Laura Robson was asked about Katie Boulter‘s chances of winning the US Open. Robson thinks there might be a new semifinalist or a finalist at the US Open and so the current British No. 1 may surprise all by emerging as a champion.
Well, why not? She wouldn’t be playing unless she believed that as well. She absolutely wants to be the best and has put in so much hard work over the last two years to see that rise in her ranking.Laura Robson said
Boulter is yet to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament, as only thrice she was able to play the third round. At the US Open, she made it to the third round in 2023.
