Emma Raducanu once again invited criticism when she announced about her withdrawal from the Hong Kong Open. Amidst censure from her critics, she was backed by former British No.1 Laura Robson.
Raducanu skipped the French Open to prepare for the grass swing and her performances helped her rankings. She reached the semifinal in the Nottingham Open and the quarterfinal in the Eastbourne International. At the Wimbledon, Raducanu bowed out after the fourth round.
Robson, who has always backed her compatriot, pointed out that after remaining on the sidelines for most of the time in 2023 which affected her rankings, the World No. 55 performed impressively this season to get back into the top 100.
Raducanu is yet to make her comeback since her mid-match retirement from the quarterfinal of the Korea Open in September. She sprained the ligaments in her foot and gave the walkover to Daria Kasatkina after the first set.
Laura Robson points out Emma Raducanu’s big mistake
After her Wimbledon exit, Emma Raducanu played just three tournaments. She participated in the Citi Open and made it to the quarterfinals. Raducanu skipped the Canadian and the Cincinnati Open as she did not get the wild cards.
The 21-year-old broke down in tears after her first-round defeat at the US Open and admitted that not having enough match practice might have been the reason behind her poor result. Laura Robson is also of the same opinion as she wanted Raducanu to play the qualifying rounds in Toronto and Cincinnati before arriving in New York.
Following her US Open exit, the Brit signed up for several tournaments for the Asian swing, the first being the Korea Open, and after the injury, she pulled out of the next few events. The former World No. 10 is yet to win her second title since her historic triumph at the 2021 US Open. She is 20/13 on the season and hasn’t reached a final in the tournaments she played.
