Iga Swiatek has not been very successful on grass, especially compared to her performances on hard courts and clay courts on grass. While she has won the French Open four times and the US Open once, the World No. 1 is yet to taste success at Wimbledon.
Swiatek was playing her fifth Wimbledon this year, where she was expected to do well. However, she crashed out of the tournament in the third round after losing to Yulia Putintseva. With Swiatek unable to perform at her best, Laura Robson analyzed the Pole’s game on grass and believes she has a weakness.
Robson has opined that Swiatek’s forehand grip is extreme. She also pointed out that while the 23-year-old relies on topspin to outfox her opponents on clay or hard courts, she is unable to do that on grass, which puts her on the back foot.
Her shots are naturally spinny and her forehand grip is quite extreme. It means she plays with a lot of topspin and on grass, that sits up a bit more for the opponent. I’m sure she will get it right. We are talking about minor adjustments. She is such a great frontrunner and so mentally strong. You back her to handle these situations when the pressure is applied.Laura Robson said as per Tennis365
The defeat also brought to an end Swiatek’s 21-match unbeaten streak.
Iga Swiatek knows what led to her underwhelming performance at 2024 Wimbledon
While Laura Robson attributed Iga Swiatek‘s struggles on grass to a flaw in her technique, the Polish ace came up with her own analysis. After the loss to Yulia Putintseva, Swiatek claimed that she was well aware of the reasons behind her underwhelming performance at the Wimbledon this year.
Swiatek said that lack of rest played a part in her lackluster performances. The World No. 1 also said that she not take the change from clay to grass well.
My tank of really pushing myself to the limits became suddenly empty. I was kind of surprised. But I know what I did wrong after Roland Garros. I didn’t really rest properly. I’m not going to make this mistake again. For me going from this kind of tennis where I felt like I’m playing the best tennis in my life to another surface where I kind of struggle a little bit more, it’s not easy.Iga Swiatek said after her Wimbledon exit (H/T: CNN)
After winning the title at Roland Garros, Swiatek did not play any warm-up tournaments on grass. She directly took part in Wimbledon, which has not been the best decision in hindsight.
