Since Novak Djokovic announced his partnership with Andy Murray as his coach last month, several legends have been critical of it. But, according to former WTA star Laura Robson, the collaboration makes total sense.

Djokovic and Murray have many things in common. They were born just one week apart in May 1987 and have known each other right from their junior careers and maintained a friendly relationship on the court. They were rivals for over a decade on the court. The pair faced each other 36 times with the former holding a 25-11 win head-to-head record.

However, Murray decided to hang his racket at the Paris Olympics after being plagued with injuries for most of the 2024 season. The British star now has a lot to offer Djokovic ahead of the 2025 Australian Open. Djokovic has struggled to be at the same level he was in 2023 and believes the collaboration will revive his tennis.

While speaking to Eurosport, Laura Robson revealed that Murray is one of the few players who understands Djokovic and will offer him relevant insight into his game. She also added that despite being surprised at the partnership, it made total sense.

I think it was a total surprise to all of us. We all had the same reaction. We were like, it’s such a surprise, but in a way, it makes total sense. At this point, I don’t know who else could coach Novak. It’s quite a tough gig because you would need the credentials, you would need the experience, and you would need to know how he’s feeling in certain situations. There are so few people on the planet who can relate to him the way that Andy can.

This season, Djokovic failed to win a Grand Slam title for the first since 2017 and didn’t win any tour-level title as well. He also parted ways with his long-term coach, Goran Ivanisevic, in March 2024 and was without a designated coach until his partnership with Murray.

Laura Robson believes Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray will have a calm partnership on and off the court

Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray will begin their partnership at the Brisbane International (however, the Brit will not be present at the tournament) which starts on December 29. The tournament has been confirmed as a warm-up for the Australian Open which the Serbian has won 10 times.

However, there have been questions about how Murray will react to Djokovic and the rest of the team during an unpleasant circumstance. Laura Robson revealed during the aforementioned conversation that the pair will have a calm relationship on and off the court.

I don’t get the vibe that Novak is going to shout at him. I just don’t think that would be the partnership that they’d have. And when they’ve competed against each other so many times and have so much respect for one another, I get the feeling that it’s going to be a much more positive set of emotions going towards the players’ box.

Also, Djokovic will play alongside Nick Kyrgios in the Brisbane International doubles. The two have become best buddies since they last faced each other at the 2022 Wimbledon Championship final.
