Laureus Sports Awards, the most prestigious sports award has announced it’s list of nominations for various sports categories. In a major omission which will certainly raise a few eyebrows, Novak Djokovic, 18 time Grandslam champion is seen missing from the list of ‘Sportsman of the Year’. The Serbian had a successful 2020 season where he lifted his eight Australian Open title and also finished as the runner-up at the French Open.
Additionally, the Serbian won four ATP titles last year, which includes two Masters titles. On the other hand, Dominic Thiem earned himself a nomination in the ‘Breakthrough Athlete of the Year’ after he lifted his maiden slam at the US Open 2020.
Rafael Nadal, Naomi Osaka, Iga Swiatek among the tennis stars nominated for the awards

Novak Djokovic’s omission from the list will garner more controversy as his fiercest rival, Rafael Nadal made his way into the list of players nominated for Sportsman of the Year Award. The Spaniard lifted his unprecedented 13th French Open title and 20th overall, equaling Federer’s record for most Grandslams won.
Naomi Osaka lifted her third Grandslam title in 2020 as she defeated Victoria Azarenka to claim the US Open title. By virtue of her exploits on court, she is one of the nominees for the Sportswoman of the Year Award.
Iga Swiatek earned herself a nomination for the Breakthrough of the Year as she lifted the French Open title in October last year. She won the title in ruthless fashion, as there was no match in which she lost more than five games. Surprisingly, prior to the French Open, not many fans new the Polish teenager who took the tennis world by storm.
