Leave Edwards alone: Khamzat Chimaev intercepts Stephen Thompson’s callout
UFC’s hottest prospect Khamzat Chimaev has been on a phenomenal run catching the attention of every second fighter in the middleweight and welterweight division. Chimaev turns his attention towards Stephen Thompson after knocking out Gerald Meerschaert within 20 seconds at UFC Vegas 11. Earlier, Thompson doubled down on his interest to face Leon Edwards via Twitter, a request he made in a recent interview with MMA Fighting.
Chimaev doesn’t have his next fight officially set despite all signs pointing to the 26-year-old Swedish fighter taking on veteran Demian Maia after Meerschaert. However, UFC president Dana White indicated Saturday that might no longer be the case.
Fight me instead: Khamzat Chimaev turns attention towards Stephen Thompson
As soon as Thompson posted his tweet. The undefeated Chimaev was quick to respond and told Thompson to come after him. There is absolutely no doubt that after 3 of the most dominating of displays, he is itching to get back in the octagon.
In his three UFC appearances, Chimaev has dominated his opponents en route to three first-round stoppages due to strikes. Prior to his win against Meerschaert, Chimaev defeated John Phillips and former Cage Warriors champions Rhys McKee and John Phillips.
However, Thompson is looking to return to action for the first time since a unanimous decision win over Vicente Luque at UFC 244. When speaking with MMA Fighting, he said Chimaev is certainly on his radar. As the standout continues his meteoric rise in both the middleweight and welterweight divisions.
