As part of his offseason routine, LeBron James usually takes his wife, Savannah, on vacations. This time, after partying quite a bit, he chose to visit France. However, there were a few other people on that trip too.
His close friend and business partner, Maverick Carter, was on that trip, along with some other people from his entourage. Then, an Instagram post from a basketball agent, Misko Raznatovic, revealed he was on a yacht alongside the Los Angeles Lakers superstar and Carter.
This led many to speculate that it could be discussions on how to bring Denver Nuggets superstar and Raznatovic’s most important client, Nikola Jokic, to the Lakers. However, Front Office Sports revealed their discussions concerned something else.
Of course, James and particularly his teammate, Luka Doncic, would love it if the Serbian superstar were to wear purple and gold. But they had some other topics to discuss, particularly one involving billions of dollars.
In early January, Bloomberg Business reported that Maverick Carter was speaking with potential investors on securing funding for a new international basketball league. They require $5 billion to start the league, and that is where Misko Raznatovic comes in.
Multiple sources informed FOS that the purpose of the meeting was regarding the new league Carter is trying to form. Raznatovic, being a power player in European basketball, holds considerable clout that Carter and LeBron James, if he is indeed involved, could harness.
The Serbian agent captioned his Instagram post, revealing they were making plans for the fall of 2026. If indeed an international league is about to start, it could come into direct competition with a planned NBA European league.
Maverick Carter, LeBron James, and Raznatovic’s league could directly rival the NBA
Since this new league will be a full-time responsibility, it means they will play right around the same time the NBA and European leagues are in session. Both men and women will make up 6 teams each, and will play in a city for two weeks before moving on to the next.

If that is the final format, that means Maverick Carter and his partners will have to find 90 players each. In a world where the NBA has announced that it is looking to expand into Europe, it will be a difficult proposition for anyone to overcome.
The NBA wants to start a European edition, which means it could be a direct feeder to its lucrative American side. The league will be able to enjoy the huge fan following the NBA already has, thus making it easier for it to succeed.
Carter and his partners will need to account for all the possibilities that they will likely go up against the biggest basketball leagues in the world. Their novel approach could become successful if they get their model right.
Maverick Carter and LeBron James’ possible International league has Formula 1 and LIV Golf ambitions
Any new league will need the cooperation of the existing leagues across the world. At least that is what the upstart Unrivaled League did when it signed WNBA stars to play in the offseason.
But Maverick Carter’s league is not looking to feed off the NBA or EuroLeague to bring in players. Their exact plans are unknown, but their schedule should see them competing with the NBA and the EuroLeague, both for players and viewers.
Their core idea is to play in one city and then travel to another. This idea is similar to Formula 1 and LIV Golf. It will help to bring a global reach that neither the NBA nor the European Leagues can match.
However, the lack of top players might hinder their chances of truly becoming a top-tier attraction. They will be offering equity, much like Unrivaled, to lure top players into their teams.
At the same time, the prospect of earning a global fan following could tempt some top players to quit the NBA or EuroLeague and play for Carter’s unnamed league.
