LeBron James breaks Kobe Bryant’s most unwanted record in Lakers’ season opener
LeBron James created history in many ways during Tuesday night's season opener, though his latest record might not be one he wants to hold.
LeBron James surpasses Kobe Bryant for an unwanted record
At this point, LeBron James has a habit of setting new records every single day. But as the future HOF’er enters his 22nd season in the NBA, James has found himself on the wrong side of the record books.
After Tuesday night’s season-opening game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, LeBron James overtook fellow Laker legend, the late great Kobe Bryant, for an unwanted All-Time record. James has now surpassed Bryant for the record of the most missed shots in NBA history.
The All-Time scoring leader in the NBA, entered Tuesday night’s game just five shots shy of Bryant’s record of 14,481 missed shots. James went 7-16 from the field against the Wolves, with nine missed field goals, clinching the top spot with 14,485 (and counting) missed field goals in his career.

This may not be a record that James would like to be associated with. However, the record is a testament to the greatness and longevity of the 39-year-old superstar. James has already tied Vince Carter for the most seasons played in NBA history as he enters year 22 in the league.
Having spent this much time on the hardwood while carrying as high an offensive load as he does, it seems like a record that was inevitably meant to be broken by James. Even so, owning the record for most missed shots in league history doesn’t have quite the same ring as breaking the All-Time scoring record. Thankfully, James owns both records.
Rounding out the list for most missed shots – ft. Lebron James and more
LeBron James truly had a historic night at the Crypto.com Arena in every sense of the word. While not all of his records are pleasing to look at, it’s still fun to see which other athletes are on the list for most missed shots of all time. There might be some surprising names, at the very least.
To start the list, we, of course, have James as the leader for the most missed field goals of all time. The late Kobe Bryant rounds out the top 2 with 14,481 missed shots. But as we round out the top 10, some surprising names pop up in the list.
NBA legends like Elgin Hayes and Karl Malone round out the top 5 with the 4th and 5th spots, respectively. Scoring maestros Dirk Nowitzki and Carmelo Anthony both appear in the 6th and 7th position on the list, respectively.
The 8th and 9th spots on the list feature two of the greatest players to ever step foot on the hardwood. The 8th spot goes to another Laker legend, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, whereas the 9th spot on the list is occupied by his highness – Air Jordan.
If this list proves anything, it’s this – greatness in the NBA, only comes with being willing to miss hundreds of shots. Or if you’re LeBron James, that might mean 14,482 shots.
