Skip Bayless calls out LeBron James for being 'overprotected'
Skip Bayless and LeBron James have a long history with each other. Bayless has been at the forefront of media criticism of James over the years. During his career on television, he has constantly called out the Lakers’ star for his style of play and failures on the big stage.
Even after leaving FS1, Bayless has continued his criticism of LeBron James, recently calling him the ‘most overprotected athlete.’ He brought up his criticism of James during an appearance on the All the Smoke podcast with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson.
Bayless’ comments came during a larger discussion on his approach to analyzing LeBron’s career. He noted that while he has frequently given LeBron credit where it’s due, the Lakers star’s perceived immunity from scrutiny continues to baffle him.
I say what I see, and I still believe to this moment, LeBron has been the most overprotected superstar in the history of the game. I have thrown him many, many, many flowers when it’s time to throw flowers. I have constantly, consistently, though nobody wants to hear me do this, but I’ve said to this day to this moment he’s still the best passer in basketball.

He revealed that he believes that James is the best passer and best player at driving towards the ring in NBA History.However, the 72-year-old brought up issues with the public perception of James as the greatest player of all time. He has been a Michael Jordan fan throughout his life.
For his part in defending his idol, Bayless brought up James’ shooting inconsistencies as part of the reason for him not being in the GOAT conversation. He also revealed that much of his criticism of James is due to the media’s failure to critique his repeated failures in the NBA Finals, even though he has won 4x Championships.
LeBron James hints at potential retirement
LeBron James’ longevity in his career is entirely unprecedented. As he approaches the 40-year-old tag next month, James is still one of the most dominant players in the league, breaking a new record every other day.
However, the end of the tunnel may be closer than many think on James’ career. After recent reports indicating his possible retirement, James himself confirmed his thoughts on retiring from the NBA.
I’m not going to play that much longer, to be completely honest. I don’t know how many years that is. If it’s one year or two years, whatever the case may be. I said the other night, I’m not playing until the wheels fall off. I’m not going to be that guy. I’m not going to be the guy who is disrespecting the game because I just wanted to be out on the floor. That won’t be me.

James addressed the media after the win against the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday. He emphasized his dedication to the game but also acknowledged his limitations. As one of the most dominant players of his generation, his departure will mark the end of an era.
