There was no doubt that when the San Antonio Spurs drafted Victor Wembanyama as the number one pick in the 2023 NBA draft, they acquired a player who could lead the franchise for years to come. Barring any serious injuries, Wembanyama is destined for greatness. The last time there was so much excitement and hype over a number one pick was LeBron James back in 2003.

James has gone on to cement his name in the history books, and the four-time champion believes Wembanyama’s best days are still ahead of him.

I’m glad I won’t be in the league when (Wembanyama’s prime) arrives. I’m glad I can watch and do this and figure out what time my tee time is tomorrow.

LeBron James on Mind The Game podcast

LeBron James is aware that 22-year-old’s rise is just the beginning. The NBA world has never seen or come across an anomaly like Victor Wembanyama. At 7’4″, he is agile, moves like a guard, and can shoot from range. Whenever on court, he is must-see TV. His ceiling is limitless, and there is a lot of excitement surrounding the Frenchman as he is touted to be the next face of the league.

A player who has been through it all in terms of expectations and hype is LeBron James. The two superstars are at very different phases in their careers. Wembanyama is expected to take over the league over the next decade, while James has been the face of the league for two decades.

Last season, Wembanyama had a huge scare that cut short his season and could have derailed his NBA career. But he has bounced back since. Currently in his third season, the Spurs center is averaging 24.8 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and a league-high 3.1 blocks.

His performances this year have placed him as a frontrunner for league MVP with just three games to go in the regular season. He is a lock for Defensive Player of the Year and is already regarded as the best two-way player in the league by a mile.

Victor Wembanyama avoids any major injury

A couple of weeks ago, Victor Wembanyama made it clear that he was going to go all out for the remainder of the season as he is eyeing his first MVP award. If he does manage to win it, he would become the youngest MVP in NBA history.

However, he suffered a setback against the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday as he had a dramatic exit from the game due to a left rib contusion. The center was at his dominant best as he had already recorded 17 points, five rebounds, and three blocks in just 16 minutes. The injury took place at an unfortunate time, with the playoffs approaching and with Wembanyama still two games short of the 65-game rule to be eligible for season-end honors.

But it looks like it is a minor setback, as the Frenchman has had positive results on X-ray imaging. NBA Insider Shams Charania reported that Wembanyama may yet return this season.

I’m told the Spurs are not anticipating this to be a major injury. He underwent X-Rays last night, on that rib, and X-Rays for Victor Wembanyama that returned negative, I am told. He will undergo more testing later today, but there is hope and optimism that those tests will confirm what they felt last night: that it’s nothing major.

With just three games to go for the regular season, Wembayama will be looking to play at least two of the next three games. They are scheduled to take on the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night.

LeBron James to take on a bigger role for the Lakers after key injuries

Another anomaly in the NBA is LeBron James. Things looked very promising for the Los Angeles Lakers during the month of March as they had all their players healthy and firing on all cylinders. But they are in some trouble now after injuries to Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.

The two key scorers are expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the regular season and the beginning of the playoffs. While James continues to play at a high level, it is a lot to expect for him to carry the team over the next few weeks.

James has shown no real signs of slowing down, but at 41, he picks and chooses his moments. He does not have the same impact on winning as he once did, but he has shown he is a force to be reckoned with at various points this season.

He missed the Lakers’ latest loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Lakers find themselves at fourth place in the Western Conference standings and are at risk of dropping to fifth place with the Houston Rockets tied on games with them.
