The 2024 NBA preseason saw veteran point guard Russell Westbrook make his much-anticipated debut with the Denver Nuggets against the Boston Celtics in Abu Dhabi. However, during the game, the Celtics broadcast team sparked controversy when a disparaging remark was made about Westbrook’s former Los Angeles Lakers teammate, LeBron James. 

In a video clip that trended, one commentator sarcastically suggested that Westbrook became a scapegoat for the Lakers’ failures. Not letting it slide, LeBron James responded to the comments on social media the following day, where he expressed his dissatisfaction and defended Russell Westbrook.

LeBron James wrote on X:

The exchange arose when one broadcaster voiced support for Westbrook, as he hoped he would excel against the Lakers after he faced criticism during his time with the purple and gold. Westbrook had joined the Lakers in August 2021 from the Washington Wizards and was expected by fans to bolster the team’s chances for a championship.

However, the partnership did not yield the desired results, as the Lakers finished the 2021-22 season with a disappointing 33-49 record, and missed the playoffs. In his debut for the Nuggets, Westbrook showcased his potential, as he contributed 12 points and eight assists in just 19 minutes off the bench, despite the team losing to the Celtics 107-103.

The new season saw the Los Angeles Lakers kick off their preseason with significant anticipation from fans on the debut of LeBron James’ son, Bronny James. Sadly, the game ended in a disappointing 124-107 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

It wasn’t the debut performance fans were expecting as Bronny struggled to find his offensive rhythm, as he missed his first five shots, he finally managed to score in the closing moments. This moment, although overshadowed by the team’s defeat, elicited cheers from the crowd, but LeBron James, who was on the bench, remained largely expressionless and did not visibly react to his son’s score.

Despite the poor outing, his performance still elicited praise from rookie coach JJ Redick. He ended the game with two points, shooting 1/6 from the field and recording three blocks.
