In Short
  • The GOAT debate is primarily between LeBron James and Michael Jordan, with other players like Kobe Bryant and Stephen Curry often mentioned.
  • Paul Pierce asserts that LeBron has made it nearly impossible for anyone to surpass Jordan in the GOAT conversation.
  • Despite LeBron's efforts and potential future championships, Pierce believes he cannot overtake Jordan's established legacy.

The GOAT debate is firmly between LeBron James and Michael Jordan, even though many have tried to throw in other names into the mix.

Some have touted Stephen Curry as having a GOAT-worthy career. At the same time, others do not agree with that sentiment, considering he has just one Finals MVP to his name.

On that basis, many scoffed when Kevin Durant asked why he wasn’t considered part of the GOAT race, since many felt that joining the best regular-season team negates that logic.

However, there are many who believe that the late great Kobe Bryant should be a part of the GOAT debate, with former teammate Shaquille O’Neal and Tracy McGrady being the biggest supporters of that logic.

He’s made being the GOAT unattainable now. When you look at it, he put a wall in front of Jordan… Because to like be the GOAT, that means you have to be better than LeBron. Nobody’s going to be better. Like, if Wemby won six championships, you going to be like, well, he’s not better than Bron because Bron statistically, it’s just so much better than everybody. So, he’s created this barrier around Jordan.

Paul Pierce said

For someone who battled against Kobe Bryant in his prime, Paul Pierce believes the GOAT debate is never going to include anyone other than Michael Jordan and LeBron James.

His No Fouls Given colleagues agreed to this logic, as with every passing day, the league’s all-time leading scorer is continuously moving the goal posts, which is going to make it extremely difficult for anyone in the future to throw their name in the GOAT debate.

Paul Pierce believes LeBron James is enjoying playing basketball

In the past five games, LeBron James has turned the negative criticism surrounding his impact on the Los Angeles Lakers into one where even his staunchest critics are appreciating his effort.

I think he loves it… When you are spending that amount of money on being ready to play and being healthy, that’s love.

This was the Boston Celtics great’s opinion on how much his former rival is enjoying playing basketball at this age. Paul Pierce believes that for someone to dedicate that much time, money, and energy into staying conditioned, it is all the proof one needs.

He believes that this is also an indication of how LeBron James worked to accept a lesser role so that his Lakers teammates can shine. Without this love for the game, the 2008 NBA champion does not believe that the four-time league MVP will be this dedicated to letting other players take over.

Paul Pierce believes there is nothing LeBron James can do to overtake Michael Jordan as the GOAT

Even though LeBron James has taken a back seat to help his Los Angeles Lakers become championship contenders, Paul Pierce does not believe winning more titles will help the former become the GOAT.

Even if LeBron wins a championship this year, and if he wins another one and he gets to six rings, if we consider LeBron behind Jordan, if LeBron wins two more rings with the Lakers, I think you still couldn’t put him ahead of Jordan.

Paul Pierce said

This means that the 48-year-old believes firmly that the path to the basketball claim is shut for good. Even if LeBron James tries his best to win two more titles, there is no way he can overtake Michael Jordan.

However, the 22-time All-Star will still be close. It is just that His Airness’ exploits over his 13 seasons with the Chicago Bulls have cemented his GOAT status for good, even though the latter does not want conversations on that matter to continue.
