As he entered his mid-30s, LeBron James used more of his awareness and understanding of opponents’ schemes than his physicality when helping the Los Angeles Lakers win games.

Now into his 40s, the superstar has struggled with his physical well-being and is helping his younger teammates learn from him before he eventually hangs up his sneakers.

Austin Reaves is one of the earlier beneficiaries, as the undrafted guard used James’ teachings to eventually take over from his mentor as the second most important player on the team. But that does not mean the others will not get some lessons, especially during in-game situations where they need their awareness more than anything else.

After helping the Lakers take the lead with his stellar 10 points in 4 and a half minutes, the superstar was aware that the Philadelphia 76ers could still win the game, especially with the time left on the clock.

A video surfaced where LeBron James was seen animatedly explaining to his teammates what they needed to do during the next inbound. It seems the Akron native had a good idea what the home team would do, and lined up accordingly.

First, watching the Sixers’ movements helped him understand that his guess was right. He instantly directed Reaves to guard Quentin Grimes. Then, as he rolled over to shadow VJ Edgecombe, he noticed Joel Embiid slipping out of the screen.

After taking a quick glance to confirm that Grimes was coming over to receive the inbounds pass, James jumped his lane and stole the ball, all while not even looking at the in-bounding Paul George. That ended the 76ers’ chances of trying to steal a win.

ESPN analyst details how LeBron James is able to contribute at 40

After LeBron James’ ageless masterclass against the Philadelphia 76ers, debates have raged as to how, at age 40 and struggling with various ailments, the King manages to contribute.

He just has to pick his spots… He’s taking advantage of his teammates, the attention that they garner, and we all know that his basketball IQ is outstanding.

Monica McNutt said on NBA Today

The analyst explained how the 4-time champion uses his awareness and smarts to confuse opponents, especially when most of their attention is on the likes of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.

McNutt then detailed that James is not exhausting as much energy as he used to before the Slovenian came to Los Angeles. Now, as he creeps towards 41, the father of 3 has resorted to fewer movements and meaningful contributions every time the ball reaches his hands.

Jayson Tatum brings Michael Jordan comparison when talking about LeBron James’ retirement

After helping his team win on two occasions, one while sacrificing his 10-point streak, some wonder what it would be when LeBron James finally leaves the NBA. While speaking with the Morris twins, Jayson Tatum said this:

It’s a generation of kids that all they know is, they’ve seen Bron in the league. They don’t know nothing else… He probably got a year or two left… I bet it was crazy when y’all seen Mike retire… It’s probably the same effect when Bron leaves. It’s gonna be a void.

Jayson Tatum said

The Celtics’ superstar believes the impact will be the same as when Michael Jordan left the game. Ratings and revenue dropped, and the league had to wait for its next hot talent, which incidentally was James.

Considering how today’s generation of NBA fans have watched James growing up, it might take more than two players the 2024 champion mentioned filling that void.
