According to reports by ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, the old guard of the Lakers had no idea about the trade discussions ongoing between the Lakers and Dallas Mavericks front office. LeBron James was reportedly at a dinner in New York with his family when he found out about the franchise altering move that the Lakers had decided to go ahead with.

James, who was coming off a dominant 33-point triple double to defeat the New York Knicks at the Madison Square Garden, was at a dinner with his family following the game, where he found out about the shocking news. As per the report by McMenamin, James was as in the dark about the trade as the rest of league, and is still trying to process Anthony Davis for Luka Doncic swap.
The trade especially comes as a shocker for James, as he and the Lakers had just started to turn a corner with their current roster. They had registered a number of significant wins over the last few weeks, with glimpses of the team that made the Western Conference Finals just 2 seasons ago visible once again. With the trade, James also bids farewell to Davis, who is more than just a teammate but a close friend of James off the court.

While almost the entire NBA world is still reeling from the shockwaves of the trade, it seems like the players involved in the trade were equally, if not more, surprised. Doncic, after leading the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA Finals just 7 months ago, had not asked for a trade request, per NBA Insider Marc Stein. Therefore, the sudden trade by the Mavericks front office came as an absolute shock to the 5x All-NBA star.
Although Doncic has been out with an injury since Christmas Day, there had been no questions about the future of the Mavericks centering around the 25-year-old perennial MVP candidate. With the trade, the Mavericks now look to center their team around the 31-year-old Anthony Davis and another former teammate of LeBron James – Kyrie Irving.
