- LeBron James actively collects trading cards, focusing on Michael Jordan and other basketball greats.
- At 41, he continues to perform at a high level, defying typical age-related decline in athletes.
- Former coach Erik Spoelstra praises James for his dedication and ability to compete against Father Time.
LeBron James is one of the most popular and globally renowned athletes, which means that anything he touches or is associated with generally excites fans.
Usually, when athletes reach age 40 or above, interest in them wanes. But the Los Angeles Lakers superstar is such that even after more than two decades in the game, fans have still not had enough of him.
Even the NBA knows that, and tries to milk every opportunity they can before the all-time leading scorer eventually calls it quits on his legendary career.
After some struggles that led him to garner criticism from fans, the media, and former players, the 41-year-old has turned his season around and is playing at a high level, turning that criticism into appreciation.
With his retirement off for a while, some speculate that the four-time champion could continue to play as long as he wants. That also means that the value of his merchandise will have to wait to rise until he finally hangs up his sneakers.
I’m looking for me. I’ll be honest, me or Michael Jordan, for sure. Then, just like great players over the years.
LeBron James said
This was the 22-time All-Star’s response when Topps asked him if he collects trading cards, and particularly who he looks for when he gets packs.

While focusing on Michael Jordan cards, evidently because of the value they hold, he also collects trading cards of past and present basketball greats, such as his Paris Olympics teammates, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant.
LeBron James’ former coach impressed with his performances
Now that it has become clear that LeBron James will continue to play basketball for some time, fans, the media, and rivals continue to be in awe of how he manages to compete at this level, and at that age.

Past 40, athletes generally decline rapidly, and most are left to play a few minutes as a role player. Instead, the four-time league MVP continues to routinely play 30+ minutes, which is why former head coach Erik Spoelstra had this to say about his former understudy.
He’s competing against not only the entire league, but he’s competing against Father Time, and he’s giving Father Time hell. He really is. You have to respect that. That doesn’t happen by accident.
Erik Spoelstra told reporters
The Miami Heat head coach reminded the gathered journalists that he continues to be surprised by LeBron James‘ dedication to his craft in the same manner he was 14 years ago.

The oldest player in the league continues to prepare similarly before games, which is what is enabling him to perform at his best despite having that many miles on his body.
LeBron James records triple-double against his former team
While Erik Spoelstra was saying this, LeBron James was probably working out on Kaseya Center’s court, where he won his first two NBA championships.
That dispelled notions that the father of three might not play the game against his former team, as it was a back-to-back game, that too, on the road.
In the past, James has missed back-to-backs, citing his need for rest and recovery. However, this time, he was ready to battle alongside his Los Angeles Lakers teammates, knowing that this stretch was going to define their season.
After being criticized for not impacting winning, the Akron native has taken a smaller role so as to help his teammates prosper. One of them, Luka Doncic, exploded for 60 points.

The other, Austin Reaves, did not have a game that is generally expected of him. James took over and dominated the boards, as well as playmaking, to finish with a triple-double consisting of 19 points, a game-high 15 rebounds, and 10 assists.
