In Short
  • Lamine Yamal draws inspiration from LeBron James ahead of FC Barcelona's crucial UEFA Champions League match.
  • Yamal changed his profile picture to an iconic image of James celebrating the 2016 NBA championship comeback.
  • James' historic comeback with the Cavaliers serves as motivation for Yamal to overturn Barcelona's two-goal deficit against Atletico Madrid.

With FC Barcelona set to take on Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, star forward Lamine Yamal has drawn inspiration from LeBron James to mount a comeback. The Catalans are two goals down after losing 0-2 in the first leg at Camp Nou.

Despite trailing by two goals, the teenage sensation remains hopeful of overturning the deficit. Yamal surprised everyone when he changed his profile picture to an iconic image of James holding the 2016 NBA championship.

Yamal spoke to the press on Monday and spoke about drawing inspiration from the four-time champion.

LeBron is one of the role models who can inspire me for tomorrow’s game, and that’s why I’ve included him. I’ll think about how he did it, and hopefully, I can do the same. We have a lot of players on the team; I consider myself just one of them, and I’m not the only one.

It is well established now that Lamine Yamal is a special and generational talent. The La Masia academy product has dazzled the footballing world over the last two years and will need to play a key role in the second leg at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, if Barcelona need to go through to the semifinals.

There is no better player to draw inspiration from than LeBron James. While the sporting stars are at very different phases in their careers, it is always good to see athletes getting inspired by athletes from another sport.

James, who is in his 23rd NBA season, may not be the player he once was, but he continues to amaze fans as he defies Father Time. He has always been regarded for his longevity, sustained excellence and for the most iconic comeback in NBA history.

Lamine Yamal captured several eyeballs across social media when he changed his profile picture to LeBron James holding the championship. But what made it bold is that it was specifically referencing the Cleveland Cavaliers’ historic 2016 NBA Finals comeback.

In one of the greatest comebacks in NBA history, the Cavs, led by James, came back from 3-1 down against the Golden State Warriors in the 2016 NBA Finals, winning game seven on the road. The Warriors in that season were the defending champions and were coming off the greatest regular season in NBA history as they went 73-9.

James played an instrumental role in the Cavs’ comeback and was named the Finals MVP for his performances. This precedent inspires Yamal to dream of achieving a similar result against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

LeBron James cannot wait for the playoffs to begin

Just a couple of weeks ago, the season was looking positive for LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers heading into the postseason. But things have taken a sharp turn since. Luka Doncic hurt his hamstring which has sidelined him for four to six weeks and to make it worse, Austin Reaves was diagnosed with a Grade 2 left oblique muscle injury and is ruled out for a similar time frame.

With their two primary scorers ruled out, it looks like James will have to lead the Lakers at the beginning of the playoffs. While it is a lot to ask from a 41-year-old, he remains excited for the postseason.

Listen, the postseason is about to be… like the kids say, lit. Litty? It’s gonna be litty, it’s gonna be wild. I’m pumped for it. Personally, I don’t know how many more postseasons I’ve got left in my career. And we were just talking about this a bit ago, like gearing up for the postseason and that moment, no matter what you did in the regular season. That sh*t goes out the window now. It starts over. Starts over. Man, I can’t wait.
