LeBron James' last-gasp winner saves Team USA from loss in pre-Olympics friendly to South Sudan
The Team USA Olympics men’s basketball team is a super team. With the likes of LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant leading a roster full of superstars, a gold medal is a foregone conclusion. Unless they take it easy against a South Sudan team comprising of current and NBA G-League players.
If not for a last second clutch basket from James, it could have turned out to be an embarrassment. Understandably, fans on the internet were fuming watching this unfold.
Team USA started off hot as they raced into a double-digit lead in the first 4 minutes of the game. Another four minutes later, the game flipped on its head. South Sudan took the lead and held on for much of the game.
At one point, they led by as much as 15 points and looked much more in sync with each other. But a third quarter rally brought the American’s back level and needed a Stephen Curry steal and long range three to take the lead back.
But even then, the youngest independent sovereign nation kept the pressure on their star-studded opponents by staying neck to neck. Their resilience was on display when they took a three-point shot with 20 seconds to go in regulation to snatch back the lead.
Then the all-time leading scorer had to take matters into his own hands. He waited until 11 seconds was left on the clock to drive left and score on a layup. After that, the South Sudanese tried, but Team USA’s defense ensured the game was in their hands.
Team USA saved at the final second did not sit well with fans
Fans of the game were expecting a Dream Team like dominance. They know many national teams are playing way better than they did during the Dream Team’s era. Even then, they did not expect a team whose players would not even make the Team USA Select roster to give a huge scare. Had LeBron James‘ shot not gone in, USA could have lost the game.
This led to many commenting furiously on social media platforms. Most of them asking if this team is actually equipped to win a gold at the Paris Olympics. Check out some of those reactions below;
The star-studded team will have to think a lot about their performances. As this kind of a game might become fateful in a competitive Olympics environment. They will face the FIBA World Cup winning Germany in the last of their friendlies. Hopefully, they bring about their dominating game by then.
