“You were down 20” LeBron James’ MVP at Paris Olympics should have gone to Stephen Curry says former player
Gilbert Arenas argues Stephen Curry's heroics in last two games of the Paris Olympics should have netted him the MVP over LeBron James.
Stephen Curry and MVP LeBron James led Team USA to Paris Olympics gold
Now that the Paris Olympics is over, all the NBA superstars who helped win the gold medal as part of Team USA are now returning home. In what seemingly could be the last time the likes of LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant played together, the trio gave the sporting world a spectacle to remember. However, some are not happy with the IOC and FIBA’s decision on the MVP of the men’s basketball tournament.
The panel of Gil’s Arena were discussing everything about the men’s tournament that just ended with a gold medal. While talking about the MVP award, former player Rashad McCants said:
You can say somebody played consistent throughout the whole time. But then that guy came through in the hardest games to put you into the position to win and win it for you. That's the valuable guy. Cause that consistent guy, if this valuable guy don't step up, you're consistently going to be on the same plane. And you were down 20. You would've lost.Rashad McCants said
Rashad McCants understands that LeBron James was the most consistent performer at the Paris Olympics. But Curry’s heroics were necessary to validate that consistency.
To this, Gilbert Arenas asked if a two-minute performance should get the MVP as compared to consistency throughout the games. McCants countered that those heroic performances in the semi as well as the finals were the reason Team USA won the gold, as the other teams were capable of toppling over the might Americans.
Those two-minute bursts helped the team stay above the French who were buoyed by their home crowd. Eventually leading them to cement themselves as the gold standard of basketball.
Paris Olympics performance elevates Stephen Curry’s GOAT status
The crew of Gil’s Arena then discussed the impact of those performances at the Paris Olympics on Stephen Curry‘s legacy. Gilbert Arenas advocated for Curry’s case of performing in the clutch.
I don't think it's about the gold medal. I mean it helps. Magic's gold medal was handed to him. I think it's how Steph got the gold is more important than just the medal itself. He showed on the highest level that he's clutch. Not the media clutch, basketball clutch.Gilbert Arenas said
Arenas was clear that every shot Curry took was in the face of pressure. But more importantly, his shots turned the pressure onto the opponents.
Those shots can significantly impact the outcome of a game, often leaving opponents scrambling to regain their advantage. When this happens, it typically creates a favorable situation for the team making the shots. These are the types of crucial shots that Stephen Curry has consistently delivered throughout his illustrious career.
But at the Olympics, on the grandest stage of all, those shots led to Team USA winning gold. And it is safe to say. those shots elevated his rank among the best point guards to ever play basketball. That puts him firmly in the GOAT status.
