LeBron James’ potential ‘ex-girlfriend’ option proposed by ex-player amidst rumors of leaving Lakers
Former NBA player Rashad McCants drew an odd parallel between LeBron James' trade possibilities and high school exes.
LeBron James was criticized for possible trade to Cleveland Cavaliers
The Los Angeles Lakers’ inconsistent start to the season has everyone worried. Rumors about LeBron James’ future with the team have resurfaced as the Lakers continue their shaky play, sparking speculation that the nearly 40-year-old basketball superstar might seek a trade before the February deadline, with some suggesting a potential return to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Former NBA player Rashad McCants recently weighed in on the possibility during an episode of the Gil’s Arena podcast with a rather odd analogy. McCants, who has never faltered in his criticism of LeBron James, compared the possible move to the Cavs to rekindling a relationship with a high school ‘ex-girlfriend’.

McCants’ analogy was meant to show his skepticism about the move, likening it to revisit something that has already run its course, i.e., James’ multiple stints with the Cavs. The remark was provocative, sure, but it did ask a poignant question: would a third stint in Cleveland be mutually beneficial for James and the Cavs, or merely a nostalgic gesture?
Financially, a trade seems feasible, with potential packages involving Jarrett Allen, Caris LeVert, and others in return for LeBron James. However, it’s difficult to envision the Lakers agreeing to such a deal, given their aspirations to compete for championships in the near future. Also, Bronny James is still on the roster, and LeBron leaving behind his son on the Lakers would certainly be quite ironic.
Rashad McCants’ deep-rooted reason for LeBron James hate
Rashad McCants’ comments about LeBron James are not a one-off, and they definitely have history to them. In an October episode of Gil’s Arena, McCants revealed that his animosity toward James dates back to their high school years. In 2001, McCants was among the top high school prospects until James rose to prominence, overshadowing him in national media.

LeBron James’ dominance in high school, where his games were even broadcast on ESPN, left an indelible mark on the basketball world. Declaring for the NBA Draft straight out of high school in 2003, James was selected first overall by Cleveland, cementing his status as a generational talent.
McCants, on the other hand, despite a strong college career at UNC and an NCAA championship, struggled to find long-term success in the NBA. Drafted in 2005, McCants’ career was marred by injuries and personal challenges, leading to an early exit from the league.
