LeBron James sent out wishes to Dejounte Murray after his season-ending injury

The New Orleans Pelicans’ season from hell only seems to be getting worse and worse. They have been plagued by a number of injuries to their key stars throughout the season, and their injury troubles only worsened on Friday when their premiere offseason signing, Dejounte Murray, suffered a season-ending injury. As details of Murray’s injury broke, he received support from none other than LeBron James.

Murray’s injury occurred during the first quarter of the Pelicans matchup against the Boston Celtics. He went up for a fadeaway jumper before suffering a non-contact injury upon his landing. Murray immediately clutched at his Achilles before being helped back to the locker room. Following the game, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James sent out his wishes to Murray for a speedy recovery.

Unfortunately for Dejounte Murray and Pelicans fans, expect the All-Star guard to be out for an extended period of time. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported postgame that Murray suffered a torn Achilles tendon injury, the worst-case scenario for any injury to the lower leg region. For a guard like Murray, whose athleticism and shiftiness have been defining factors of his game, an Achilles injury is not a good sign.

Generally, a rupture of the Achilles tendon is seen as a trajectory-changing injury. For a star like Murray, the recovery period could range towards a year, including a lengthy rehabilitation process. This means that Murray will not only be sidelined for the entirety of this season, but also perhaps at the beginning of the next season. This certainly will not bode well for either of the Pelicans or Dejounte Murray.

LeBron James has been a mentor to Dejounte Murray

LeBron James has regard for a number of the younger stars in the league, but the season-ending injury to Dejounte Murray must have stung the 40-year-old a little. Murray and James have maintained a tight bond off the court, with James almost acting like a mentor to the young star. He reflected the 2022 media day, reflecting on the guidance he had received from James.

He’s a great dude. A great man, a great father, a great leader, a great basketball player. Somebody that took me under his wing around 17 years old. So, you know, I’m always preaching I’m thankful and grateful because I mean that. I’m just thankful to have somebody like that in my corner, guiding me off the floor and also on the floor. So, that’s a great dude and I appreciate it.

Dejounte Murray on James in 2022

Both LeBron James and Dejounte Murray are signed to Klutch Sports under Rich Paul. They have also been spotted training together often during the offseason, with Murray being one of the few younger players James has taken under his wing. As Murray deals with the deafening blow of his Achilles injury, expect James to be a voice of reason and guidance for the 28-year-old star.
