Joel Embiid is having the time of his life. First becoming an NBA MVP in the season before last. Then being injured last season and missing out on another chance at an NBA title. Then his Philadelphia 76ers had an excellent off-season, and now winning a gold medal with Team USA at the Paris Olympics. However, French fans constantly reminded the big man of his decision to not play for France. But today he had the last laugh with LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry at hand.
When the gold medal winners stepped up to the podium, they were met with rapturous cheers from the crowd. As they were given their medals one by one, the crowd cheered them on. But when the medal tray reached Embiid, the French crowd brought back their boos. Hearing this, the Cameroon-born French citizen waved his hands to taunt their boos. LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry were at hand to add to the taunt as they raised their hands egging the crowd to get louder.
As the boos got louder, and now with the Olympic gold medal hanging from his neck, Joel Embiid took it one step further. He brought back the ‘Suck it’ celebration from WWE’s D-Generation X. He did not wait to do it on the court, rather did it right on the podium, in front of the dignitary handing out the medals.
That brought out a bout of laughter from his American teammates. They know he is capable of handling hostile crowds. To be in a country in which he is a citizen and shutting down the boos takes a lot of courage. It seems that has something to do with where he plays every season.
Joel Embiid has his skin toughened in Philadelphia
Joel Embiid plays for the Philadelphia 76ers. Considering the reputation of the fans of that city, a fan wrote this in reply to the viral video: “What the French don’t understand is Embiid is Philadelphian so booing actually powers him.”
What that means is that his skin is toughened playing in front of those passionate Philadelphia fans. Therefore, he is accustomed to being booed now and then. Moreover, those boos ignite him.
Those who know the world of sports know that Philadelphia is one of the toughest places to play in. Fans are extremely passionate about their sports teams. That pressure can either make or break a player. He has been there for 10 seasons but played only 8. In that time, he has seen the love and hate from the fans throughout that period.
That has made him capable of taking on the boos the French had in store for him. Those boos even made him play some of the best balls in the knockout stages of the Paris Olympics. With his play backing him up, those D-X chops and taunts seem justified.
