It was an impressive performance by LeBron James and Luka Doncic, who combined to score 65 points on Friday night. The Los Angeles Lakers have gotten their 2026 off to a winning start as they beat the Memphis Grizzlies 128-121 at the Crypto.com Arena. In the absence of Austin Reaves, who has been the story of the season for the Lakers, Jake LaRavia scored 21 points in a strong outing against his former club.
The Lakers were not in the best of form heading into the fixture as they had lost four of their last five games. Their struggles on the defensive end was constantly getting exposed against young and athletic teams which is one of the main reasons why they are not seen as championship contenders despite their strong start to the season.
The win on Friday improved the Lakers’ record to 21-11 and currently placed at fifth in the Western Conference standings, and are just one game ahead of the sixth-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves. While for the Memphis Grizzlies, things have been far from pleasant as they have now lost three games in a row. The Grizzlies sit at ninth with a 15-19 record.
Luka Doncic scored a game-high 34 points to go along with six rebounds and eight assists. The Slovenian guard has shown no signs of slowing down as he leads the race for the scoring title and is currently averaging 33.6 points, 8.1 rebounds and 8.7 assists.
Meanwhile, LeBron James has had a slow start to the season after missing the first 14 games due to injury. But he is starting to show his old self once again as it appears that he has worked his way into top condition now. Against the Grizzlies, James recorded 31 points, nine rebounds and six assists in one of his best performances in the 2025-26 campaign.
Both James and Doncic were in high spirits and shared a cordial moment in the fourth quarter when the Lakers took a nine-point lead with under two minutes to go.

It was the 11th consecutive game that Doncic has crossed the 25-point mark. The Lakers will hope that their two star players can stay healthy and put up such dominant performances as the season progresses.

LeBron James put on a show against the Grizzlies
Having just 41, there has been some criticism of James for his lack of energy in defence. His stat line may not be the same as it once was, but he is still averaging 20.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 6.5 assists and has been averaging 25.4 points in his last eight games.

Following his impressive performance against the Grizzlies, head coach JJ Redick praised the four-time champion in the post-match press conference.
He was phenomenal. I mean, there was just a few stretches there where they made runs and the response from him… It felt like every time we needed a bucket, he just kinda willed. Whether it was driving the basketball, getting into the paint, getting to two feet, and just was phenomenal tonight.
While Doncic led the scorers, it was James who stepped up in the final quarter as he had 10 points and three assists in a back-and-forth game. James’ performances may be up and down this season, but he has shown that he can still pick and choose his moments to produce magic.
