Hip-hop and basketball have gone hand in hand since hip-hop became the dominant genre in pop culture in the mid to late 90s. Rappers namedrop NBA players and prospects by the dozen in new songs on a weekly basis. The two subcultures have many of the same shared spaces in the conscious of male bonding and society. And over the past decade, LeBron James and Drake have been the faces of their spaces.

These two men have shared many stages and been part of the same social circles for nearly two decades now. A clip of LeBron James in the music video for the 2009 hit song Forever, which starred Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and Eminem was the first time the general public saw the two together on the same stage. Over the years, Drake has name-dropped LeBron on many of his songs and albums, including the 2018 hit from Scorpion, ‘Nonstop‘, which charted at No. 2 on Billboard.

Drake has gone above and beyond to show his affection and admiration for James in many ways. He turned up at Sierra Canyon to perform for Bronny James‘ schoolmates. A few days after Bronny suffered a cardiac arrest in 2023, he was brought out by Drake on stage for a date of his tour. Drake also appeared on an video for James’ Uninterrupted media channel in 2018 soon after he was dissed by Pusha T.

For two people that are this ‘tight’ in the public eye, the way that LeBron James has been vocal about his liking for Kendrick Lamar over the past 18 months during his beef with Drake is certainly something the latter has reason to take offense to. James and his wife, Savannah, added more fuel to this by dancing in public to the hit song Not Like Us, which calls Drake and his entourage pedophiles as a crowning moment.

This isn’t the first time that LeBron and Savannah have been spotted dancing to Not Like Us in public. The couple were among the first celebrities to be filmed dancing to the tune in May last year. They also attended the Pop Out concert on Juneteenth by Lamar, a sign that they had picked his side in the beef.

Drake has sent several shots at LeBron James over the past year

Drake is not a man to take such a breach of his loyalty without something to say. Although not a top-tier emcee, he still has the biggest commercial presence any hip-hop artist has had in the history of the genre. He has almost a duty in a sense to address any violation of his trust or disrespect by a prominent figure. It is an expectation that he’s set up in his music career by going after the likes of Serena Williams and more.

Drake first addressed this issue in a leaked track called Fighting Irish Freestyle, which went viral online in January this year, with the lyrics

Remember we traded watches

I gave you the arabic dial and you gave me the numbered edition

He had more for him in his recent track What Did I Miss?, which went no. 2 on Billboard this past weekend, saying

I saw bro at the Pop Out with them but been d**k-riding gang since ‘Headlines’

Drake obviously, and understandably, feels betrayed by his former friend for so publicly uplifting someone whom he considers a close friend. Although James has been a fan of James, he definitely had a closer bond with Drake than Lamar before the beef.
