Russell Wilson is at the lowest point in his illustrious NFL career. After being one of the better quarterbacks for over a decade, the Giants star’s last few years have been disappointing.

His struggles started after he was traded to the Denver Broncos, as he could not get to grips with the team’s schemes and turned the ball over quite a few times.

Even after quarterback whisperer Sean Payton took over the reins, there was no improvement, leading to some tense situations with the head coach, signaling that he needed to move on.

Then, with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he started well, and he orchestrated some wins. But later in the season, his goal-line struggles came to the fore as the team bounced out of the Wild Card round.

This season with the New York Giants, there was hope that he could bring some semblance of his past self. However, that past self, which included a successful Super Bowl-winning stint with the Seattle Seahawks, was not without some help.

When the Legion of Boom was there, he had a legendary defense, an all-time defense, and how much success he had. Without that legendary defense, he’s been 4-11, 7-8, 0-3 to start with the Giants. He was a winning football player in Seattle.

Richard Sherman might sound like he was making his and his defensive teammates’ case as the reason the Seattle Seahawks of the early 2010s were successful.

However, his words also suggest that without that legendary defense, Russell Wilson would not have a career graph that he touts to potential suitors in the offseason.

Richard Sherman might have a point regarding Russell Wilson’s career

When Russell Wilson came in as a third round pick, many questioned if the Seattle Seahawks had made the right choice. Soon, he was performing well, and the team registered a 4-game improvement.

The following season, they were the underdogs on their way to the Super Bowl and won against Peyton Manning‘s Denver Broncos. They repeated their run to the championship game again the following season.

However, a goal-line interception stopped them from repeating. That play seemed to fracture the team from within, as Richard Sherman and his teammates were upset that head coach Pete Carroll did not give the ball to running back Marshawn Lynch.

There was no better running back in the league at the time, especially when it came to goal-line situations. The team felt that Carroll and the offensive coordinators wanted to make Wilson the hero of the day, and lost the plot.

Eventually, the fractured team disintegrated as the organization leaned towards its quarterback. They did appear in the playoffs in 5 out of Russel Wilson’s final 7 seasons with the franchise. However, their performance degraded over time.

Sherman’s claim that it was the defense and the running game that helped Wilson become a great QB might have logic, as without them, he has struggled to be as good.

Former tight end believes Russell Wilson played himself out of the Hall of Fame

Russell Wilson put up a brave face and deflected questions about retiring after he was demoted to QB2. However, it is a sad situation, as per Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez.

If ever there was somebody who played himself out of a Hall of Fame, it’s Russell Wilson… I don’t know if it’s going to get any better. I don’t want to see him on a sideline holding a clipboard.

The Kansas City Chiefs great listed how it went from Wilson’s heady days in Seattle to when he was paid $39 million to leave the Denver Broncos. Then, after a mid-caliber season with the Steelers, and now these 3 games with the Giants, Gonzalez is unsure about the QB’s prospects.
