Leicester City vs Tottenham Hotspur: Another Premier League fixture postponed following a hike in Covid cases

The recent outbreak of the new Covid variant- Omicron has impacted the Premier League. A lot of games are being called off due to the players and staff getting affected by the virus. Leicester City vs Tottenham Hotspur is the third game of match week 17 that has been postponed followed by the games Brentford vs Manchester United and Burnley vs Watford.

For the London side, this is their third fixture getting called off following the cancellation of their Conference League match as well as a Premier League game last week. Both Stade Rennais and Brighton are having covid concerns and were unable to keep the squad ready for the fixture.

However, the Premier League denied a request from Leicester to call this game off. But eventually, a second request forced them to postpone the match.

The Premier League said in a Statement

“The Premier League board has postponed Leicester City’s match against Tottenham Hotspur tonight due to an increase in positive COVID-19 cases within Leicester’s squad today. In light of the new information, Leicester applied this morning for the fixture to be called off due to an ongoing outbreak within the squad, which has resulted in more players and staff testing positive for COVID-19 today.

“This has left the club with an insufficient number of players available to fulfill the match. Following consultation with the Premier League and UK Health Security Agency, the club’s first-team training ground was closed this morning to help contain the outbreak.

“The Premier League understands this decision will disappoint and frustrate fans who were due to attend this evening’s match and apologizes for the inconvenience and disruption caused at such short notice.”

Antonio Conte shared his thoughts regarding the matches being canceled

In his pre-match press conference, Conte said: “The Premier League didn’t want to postpone the game against Leicester, maybe because we have to play against Burnley and Brighton. We can understand on one hand, on the other I think that we deserved to play our chance against Rennes and don’t find a good solution between UEFA and Premier League. Why does Tottenham have to pay for this?

“It’s not fair that we have to pay for a situation that’s not our fault. I understand if we did something wrong. We must be ready to accept every decision. For the club, for the players, for me and my staff, it’s very difficult to understand what is happening.”

Will the Premier League get canceled?

Following the ongoing rise in the Omicron variant in the UK, there is a significant possibility that the Premier League will call off the season for an indefinite time period. The League announced 42 positive tests for Covid on Monday which is the most ever recorded in a single week.
