The Minnesota Vikings did all they could to draft JJ McCarthy as they were sure of him being their next franchise quarterback. A player who can develop and eventually win the Super Bowl.
However, not everyone is sold on that idea. Especially former star running back LeSean McCoy, who has a quite different opinion. While speaking on the show Speak on FS1, the former 2-time champion was asked who the loser was from this year’s NFL draft.
I'm with the Vikings. So, I see the Vikings the biggest losers because you go out there and get JJ. Like what shows you that. When I watch his tape. Maybe something I don't know. I don't know his leadership. I don't know what type of player is he in the huddle. Those things matter. But when I watch his game tape. Nothing jumps off like yo we gotta add this dude at No. 10.LeSean McCoy said
Essentially, LeSean McCoy is not sold on JJ McCarthy. Not especially at No. 10. He thinks there is nothing that shows that McCarthy deserved to go that high.
He explained his view by suggesting that at Michigan, then-head coach Jim Harbaugh was successful on the back of running the ball and playing outstanding defense. McCoy suggests McCarthy was just there to throw the odd pass here and there.
The former All-Pro suggested that the Vikings reached too high to draft McCarthy. Even if they were his guy, they could have taken him lower and not throw away all those draft picks to acquire him.
The Minnesota Vikings were sold on JJ McCarthy
For the Minnesota Vikings, the writing was on the wall after last season. After finishing with a disappointing 7-10 record, they knew that the only good part of it was that they had a high enough 1st round pick. Then on the opening day of free agency, they lost Kirk Cousins to the Atlanta Falcons. Now they needed to draft the quarterback of their future.
Which is why the team scouted McCarthy extensively at the Combine. Enough to keep him high on their draft board. The only kicker was if a team picking before them were to snag him. However, as the 2024 NFL draft progressed, the only threat remaining were teams picking behind them who could potentially jump the queue.
Which is why they made a draft day trade to jump up 1 spot and snag their favored quarterback with the No. 10 pick. Now the team needs to build around JJ McCarthy for long-term success.
