The Buffalo Bills drafted Keon Coleman as Josh Allen‘s future number one target man after Stefon Diggs left the team. However, Coleman’s performances haven’t been up to the mark, leaving question marks about his future.

In 26 appearances over the last two years, Coleman caught 67 passes for 960 yards and 4 touchdowns. In the two playoff games, he caught just two passes and dropped an easy touchdown before the Broncos knocked the Bills out.

Bills owner Terry Pegula openly criticized Sean McDermott, who was reportedly the key influence behind the team’s decision to draft Coleman. After hearing the blame game, LeSean McCoy urged the Bills to trade Coleman in the next window. He tweeted:

You got to trade him…Imagine hearing from your bosses that nobody really wanted you.. everything don’t need explained.

Pegula made those comments just days after firing McDermott, but kept general manager Brandon Beane—a decision that sparked plenty of questions on its own. Reporters asked Beane to share his thoughts on Coleman’s performance before Pegula took charge.

The coaching staff pushed to draft Keon [Coleman]. I’m not saying Brandon wouldn’t have drafted him. But he wasn’t his first choice. That was Brandon Beane being a team player and taking advice from his coaching staff, who felt strongly about the player and he’s taken, for some reason, heat over it and not saying a word about it. But I’m here to tell you the true story.

The Bills made a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs in the second round of the 2024 draft and then selected Coleman. KC traded up to take Texans WR Xavier Worthy.

Pete Prisco calls out the Bills’ owner for his comments on Keon Coleman

McDermott was nearing his time in Buffalo after another failed playoff campaign. Allen’s numbers were better than in his MVP season, but he still couldn’t overcome his postseason struggles.

In the Broncos game, Allen fumbled the ball four times, lost twice, and threw two interceptions. Coleman saw three targets. He caught one, which was a touchdown. The Bills missed a golden chance to win a ring, especially with most of the heavyweights already out of the competition.

Clearly, Pegula wasn’t a fan of the Coleman pick, and judging by his comments, he would have preferred to take a different player. That being said, CBS Sports veteran analyst Pete Prisco argued that Pegula went overboard with his criticism. He said:

Terry Pegula didn’t need to do that. He laid out Sean McDermott and Keon Coleman with one comment, and I don’t think that’s fair to Keon Coleman; he’s still on your roster!

Back in November last year, former NFL quarterback Cam Newton shared his thoughts on the Florida State graduate after the Bills suspended Coleman for being late. He said on his podcast:

Folks ain’t gonna keep being patient with you [Keon]. That playful person that took the Buffalo city by storm in his first interview, and he sat down was like, ‘Yeah! I love cookies.’ And he had the, the whole- yeah, all that. That was all cool. But we give that grace to young players… Big Dog, you [are] supposed to be our number one [C’mon, now]. And you’re playing like a b*m.

Coleman still has a couple more years left on his rookie contract. However, the Bills have the power to trade him to another team. Unless he racks up a few big performances in the new season, he might have to start looking for a new home elsewhere.
