The Paris Olympics 200m men’s race takes a controversial turn following gold medal winner Letsile Tebogo’s comments on Noah Lyles. During a media appearance on Thursday, Tebogo commented how he can’t become the face of athletics and passed over the crown to Lyles.
The incident took place after he was asked if he considers himself the face of athletics now. To his reply, “I can’t be the face of athletics because I’m not an arrogant or a loud person like Noah (Lyles).”

After winning the 100m race, Lyles was “pretty confident” in taking the gold at 200m. However, he was later diagnosed with COVID-19 and exited the race after winning bronze. Kenny Bednarek took silver home, while Tebogo won gold.
Fans on social media got divided on Lyles’ positive COVID take, questioning how he was jumping around the track if he was ill. There were also many who supported him in finishing the race and winning bronze.
LETSILE TEBOGO congratulations ?

Ik you have had a very rough year off the track and despite that you overcame it all!
Lyles even took time to congratulate him after the race before being taken out by a wheelchair. He also congratulated him on social media. However, Letsile Tebogo’s comment during the press conference took a controversial turn as fans discussed whether he meant what he said or was just a misinterpretation.

On the other hand, Letsile Tebogo’s comments divided the track and field fans, questioning if it was intentional or not. Many supported the African racer saying it was just a language barrier, and he didn’t mean it.
Others stated how it lacked sportsmanship, “Tebogo smoked him.” Check out some of the reactions below:

Here was his answer:
"I can't be the face of athletics because I'm not an arrogant or a loud person like Noah (Lyles)."#Paris2024 pic.twitter.com/HzafPb1kaM
Meanwhile Noah congratulated him on his page. Because if we’re really gonna be truthful, Noah had Covid and still got third place. Everybody goes about their business differently, but to be disrespectful because somebody does it different than you not cool.

May not be as loud, but to say that at presser absolutely makes you more arrogant.

He really didn’t mean it in a bad way. Remember English is also not did first language… sad that Letsile is getting hate for his comment when he’s just misunderstood….

As an African and a speaker of English as a second language, I perfectly understand what Tebogo says here and I do not think he actually meant to call Noah arrogant in a negative way. I think he just meant to say he’s not as loud as Noah and doesn’t have the same positive…

Has to be some type of Language barrier here. I don’t think it was malicious at all
— Muñoz (@CNMunoz) August 8, 2024
You can’t interpret every word to have the same sentiment as we would assume because there is a language barrier.

I never root for the USA to lose but I can’t say I’m mad he lost. Tebogo smoked him. His response was accurate.
— Darryl (@DarrylG1611) August 8, 2024
I think English has a second language is the issue here. I think he does respect Noah. He is trying to say he’s not an extrovert like Noah.

This is why you can’t let them win, they throw you under the bus for master acceptance

The Paris Olympics 200m race ended in Noah Lyles’ heartbreak as he failed to compete in the race in his 100% form. Tebogo’s win marked a new chapter in the history of African athletics, as he became the first Olympian to win the 200m race in the continent.
