The Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coach, Liam Coen, made light of the sign-stealing allegations made by the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive coordinator, Robert Saleh. The Jaguars (2-1) are set to play the NFC West leader 49ers (3-0), at EverBank Stadium tomorrow.
Two days ago, Saleh made some striking claims about the Jaguars. He insinuated that the Jaguars have an advanced system in place, handled by a Minnesota team, that helps them in ‘legal sign-stealing’. The part about the Minnesotans might be referring to the Jags’ OC Grant Udinski, who was part of the Minnesota Vikings before.
He claimed that the system has put their upcoming opponents in the driving seat while they were handed a tough situation.
Liam [Coen] and his staff, a couple of guys coming from Minnesota, they’ve got a—legally—a really advanced signal-stealing type system where they always find a way to put themselves in an advantageous situation… So we’ve got to be great with our signals and we’ve got to be great with our communication to combat some of the tells that we might give on the field.
Robert Saleh told in the press conference
Saleh also said that Sean McVay and Kevin O’Connell are parties to this system. The former Jets HC had immediately faced a backlash from the fans of all three teams and beyond.
Later, the 49ers head coach, Kyle Shanahan, came to Saleh’s rescue and clarified that Saleh didn’t mean it as an accusation but a compliment. He acknowledged that the term “sign-stealing” can be something of a buzzword that makes people feel as though it’s an insult.
The noise from the Niners’ camp was met with ignorance by Liam Coen. Coen refused to elaborate or speak about the remarks made by Saleh.
Yeah, I’m not going to speak on that fully right now. We have a huge game for us coming up this weekend. Got a great defense that we’ve got to go and attack. And that’s where our whole mindset and mentality is right now.

However, he did admit that understanding the cues from opposition coaches is necessary from a gamesmanship point of view.

Brock Purdy may return to field for the Niners against the Jacksonville Jaguars
The San Francisco 49ers will have quarterback Brock Purdy back under center when they host the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Kyle Shanahan confirmed Friday that Purdy, who missed the last two games with a toe injury, will return to the starting lineup.

Purdy practiced all week and was upgraded from limited sessions on Wednesday and Thursday to a full participant on Friday. He no longer carries an injury designation, signaling a full recovery.
He looked good. He got to do a lot more than last week, and each day he got a lot better.

The 49ers nearly used Purdy as an emergency backup in their Week 3 win over Arizona but chose caution to prevent aggravating the injury. This week, Purdy claims his toe has “healed up” and he feels confident making throws and moving in the pocket.
Purdy’s return is timely, as backup Mac Jones, who led San Francisco to two victories, has been limited by a left knee sprain. Jones has since been cleared for action.
