Real Madrid Superstar Karim Benzema did not attend the FIFA awards ceremony hosted in Paris on February 28. The French footballer posted a bizarre cryptic message on his Instagram shortly after Argentina’s Lionel Messi beat him and Kylian Mbappe to win the FIFA Best Player of the Year 2022 award. The video raised a lot of eyebrows, as someone in the video was calling out the word ‘liar,’ on repeat. Fans concluded that Benzema was not at all happy after losing out to the prestigious award.

Karim Benzema ended up in third position for the Best Player award with 32 points, followed by his French teammate Kylian Mbappe, who received 44 points. Lionel Messi topped the voting with 52 points, as he lifted his seventh FIFA Best Player Award. In the video posted by Benzema, a man can be heard calling out ”Liar, yes, you liar,” followed by the caption “Good night,” which showed his disinterest in the FIFA ceremony.

Benzema enjoyed perhaps his best season with Real Madrid, as the French forward led the Los Blancos to the UEFA Champions League and La Liga title in the 2021/22 season. Real Madrid won both titles in one season only for the fourth time in their history. Benzema smashed 44 goals and provided 15 assists in 46 matches in all competitions during the 2021/22 campaign. Benzema also won his first Balon d’Or in 2022.

Real Madrid fans trolled David Alaba after his vote to Lionel Messi

Real Madrid fans were not happy with the Austrian full-back David Alaba after he voted Lionel Messi ahead of Karim Benzema for the FIFA Best Player Award. Shortly after Messi lifted the award, the votes from the captains of the International football teams were announced. Alaba was one of the 211 captains who voted for the FIFA Men’s award. He received huge criticism for choosing Messi over his own teammate Benzema.

Fans stormed David Alaba’s social media with abuses, and #AlabaOut quickly climbed the ranks of trending hashtags on Twitter, within hours of the announcement. Alaba shortly released a formal statement on the pressing matter, explaining the reason behind his vote for Lionel Messi. “As for the FIFA The Best Award: The Austrian team votes for this award as a team, not just me. Everyone on the team council can vote and that’s how it’s decided,” Alaba stated.

Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema, Thibaut Courtois and Carlo Ancelotti were all nominated for a Best FIFA Football Award in their respective categories. However they all fell short to Argentina’s Lionel Messi, Emiliano Martinez and Lionel Scaloni. Interestingly the Real Madrid trio were not present during the FIFA Ceremony.
